Watching the raft of newly elected GOP lawmakers converge on Washington, I couldn't help thinking about an issue I hope our party will better address. I call on my fellow Republicans to open their minds to rethinking what has largely become our party's line: denying that climate change and global warming are occurring and that they are largely due to human activities.
National Journal reported last month that 19 of the 20 serious GOP Senate challengers declared that the science of climate change is either inconclusive or flat-out wrong.

Consistent with patterns showing negative feedback (e.g. water vapor diminishing rather than adding to CO2 warming). This former congressman has been eating too many omnibus hamburgers via his paid gig as a "special advisor". He is a know-nothing shill.
Same as mine, and after the sun's role in climate change I would add water vapor's role in climate regulation. Geologically speaking, we are always on the brink of destruction since a new ice age or optimum could pop up in a century or so. The CO2 we add to the atmosphere does not do much to change the equation either way.
If they wont substantively acknowledge the corruption revealed by the CRU emails, they are know-nothings.I'll type this slowly, so maybe you'll understand, Sherwood -
A thorough congressional investigation of all of the above is necessary before I will believe a word Al Gore says about a relationship between the climate and man-induced combustion of carbon.
- The big picture is that there have been Ice Ages and there have been warmer periods - and we're not in an ice age now. So, yeah - the earth used to be colder than it is now. And colder than it was before the first substantial human use of coal or petroleum.
- Some of the data seem to say that temperature and CO2 are correlated - but that the CO2 has risen after the temperature has risen, not before. Oh, and BTW the "solar constant" is not a constant.
- On a geological time scale, we have records of thermometer readings only for the present time. Thermometers were invented "yesterday." Extreme skepticism is in order when someone glibly appends the thermometer readings of the present moment onto geological data, and presumes to extrapolate into the future.
- "Anthropogenic Global Warming" - suddenly transformed into "Climate Change" when the most recent temperature readings failed to cooperate - is used to promote vast impositions on the world, and especially the US, economy. Huge quantities of money are at stake. Extreme skepticism is in order when people are proposing to seize control of such vast sums - and I don't care how many PhD degrees you have on your side. I am not willing to check my brain at the door, and just let you make all the decisions. You have to convince me. Facts and logic. Facts and logic.
- The leak of the notorious "Climategate e-mails" and its associated computer programs, and the comments in those programs, plainly indicate that the "computer models" of the climate were not designed to learn about the ancient climate but to do a snow job on the public to convince us of the "scientific" basis for conclusions which are convenient for the scientists who created them. IOW, it looks like their conclusions and their initial assumptions are one and the same.
We need a debate on who should go to prison for pushing this scam, so-called journalists included. BTW, all their ill-gotten booty should be seized and returned to the taxpayer.
No way. Clarence was 6’ 7” and weighed 400 lbs. As punishment we had to climb him in gym class.
The Navier Stokes equations describe atmospheric flow as affected by heat, mass and density. They are non-linear, which means that future states can not be predicted long term. That is why weather predictions fail miserably at 7 to 10 days, and often sooner.
Predict multiple days correctly tens of years in advance? That is not possible.
The sun is another consideration, again, the flow is affected by heat, mass and density, and described by non-linear differential equations. The sun can not be predicted long term.
Climate study as a historical exercise can be performed, so long as you know that “average temperature” is an artifact of the way you collect your data, and has no ability to predict the future (past a few days). Since Hershel, it has been known that the number of sun spots affect plant growth, as he found correlation between sun spots and warm weather (with his surrogate being grain prices).
First, any poison is in the dose. Enough water will kill. Enough Oxygen is toxic.
LD 50 (Lethal if ingested for 50% of 150 lb men) for DDT is 9 grams. By contrast LD 50 for caffine (1-3-7 trimethyl Xanthine) is 5 grams. Noone has ever been killed by spraying DDT. WWII service men would comb it through their hair to kill insects/lice.
A fellow once went to a DDT plant to do a study on cancer. He stopped in to discuss it with the human resources manager. The manager told him he could save him some time. The cancer rate was zero.
The researcher protested. “Surely with 900 people you have had someone with cancer!”
The HR manager walked his claim back, but just a tad. “Well, there is Bob. He was told he had inoperable cancer and only 6 months to live when we hired him. A few months after he began work his cancer went into remission. He has been working here for 9 years, and and is afraid to quit!”
So, Delay was approximately right. DDT is not harmless, but in reasonable doses is not harmful, and is perhaps helpful to humans.
Rachael Carson’s book “Silent Spring” was bad junk science.
Great!
Yeah! I know!
I was on to this game YEARS ago.
Btt
The principal causes for change in the Earth's climate are cycles which repeat over periods ranging from hundreds, to hundreds of thousands of years:
Not one Global Warmer has bothered to inform the public where, exactly, Mother Gaia is in these cycles.
There are three cyclical factors:
Milankovitch combined what we know of glaciation history with the Earth's position relative to the Sun. The theory has long since been substantiated. For example, as European glaciers retreat, archaeologists discover many pre-historic lost settlements from a warmer era. Oetzi the Iceman was running through an alpine forest, not a glacier valley!
In fact, relative to our position in the Milankovitch Cycle(s), glaciers probably ought to be melting at a FASTER rate than they actually are.
In addition, we are in a period of very moderate Solar Activity.
What it all means is that Earth is in an interglacial period during which seasonal differences in the hemisphere ought to lessen, mainly observable in warmer winters in one hemisphere. The opposite would be true in the other hemisphere.
To ignore the Milankovitch Cycles and Solar Activity in any discussion of Climate Change makes that discussion specious. To allocate public money to "correct" them, insane.
Ought we to be aware of the changes in Earth's climate and study them and their effects? O sure. But while we can react to them, we can't change them or stop them. In the 1970's and 1960s, many of these same politically correct "scientists" (the teachers of the nut-jobs o today) were seemingly worried about "Global Cooling." It even made it to the cover of Time! The left has succeeded in conflating "Pollution" with "Dangerous Climate Change." "Pollution" is bad.
Unfortunately for their case, it would seem that it has nothing to do with global climate changes, which are most likely caused by cosmic events and movements beyond our control. Man-made Pollution can be controlled and we are doing that. Unfortunately, a volcano is also a major uncontrollable "polluter" on a scale that dwarfs human activity. Like a volcano and other geological phenomena, the cyclical progression of Earth's orbits through our solar system cannot be controlled.
The broad outlines of Milankovitch's Glaciation Cycles ought to be at least presented. After all, astronomers and physicists have accepted the theory for decades! I will vote ...twice ... for the first Republican who has the nerve to say, "Anthropogenic Global Warming is nonsense."
