Dick's Sporting Goods gets the unlucky honor of being this year's villain in the “War on Christmas” campaign. The American Family Association has singled it out for a boycott this holiday season because the chain is “against” the holiday, reports Advertising Age.

One of its offenses is having a "Holiday Shop” section on its website, with no mention of Christmas.

All in all, though, the defense of Christmas has been going splendidly for the AFA, says a spokesman; over five years, the percentage of retailers acknowledging Christmas has soared from 20% to 80%, he says. And while Dick's may be "the 'most anti-Christmas' of all," only eight retailers remain on the “Companies Against Christmas” list, including Barnes & Noble, CVS, and RadioShack.

The campaign is “not bullying," says the rep. "It's consumer advocacy."

What should you call your promotion that covers Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years?

Dick’s bought out Galyan’s about 6 years ago. Too bad, Galyan’s was a much, much better store especially wrt the shooting sports. I never was much of a fan of theirs, now even less so.

I volunteer in a reenactment group and started with December’s newsletter looking like this: “Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukauh, Happy Yule, and Happy New Year.” Finally, decided Happy Holidays might cover it.

I don’t know what the deal is here, but I should point out that there are genuine Christians who don’t celebrate Christmas because they don’t agree that it is Christian. There was a time in this nation, and in Protestant Europe when that was more the norm than exception. Not everyone who chooses to pass on Christmas is a member of the evil, devil, heathen faction, or a cultists, or a liberal airhead, and not everyone who chooses to celebrate Christmas is Christian, or even pretending to be one. ...But, since I wasn’t planning on buying anything from Dick’s Sporting Goods, my failure to boycott is meaningless. God bless all of you, and may you have a wonderful holiday season with the blessings of Christ in whatever you choose to celebrate or not celebrate.

Hehe, that’s how I see it too.

There are still (probably) a lot of businesses that are truly anti-Christmas, but the simple ‘Happy Holidays’ sale at Thanksgiving time doesn’t seem like a good way to measure it.

You are correct...I know many Christians who don't observe Christmas for the reason you cite. However...these retailers know darn well that without Christmas; there would be no holiday, and no yearly profit margins. A majority of the people in this country celebrate Christmas, and for retailers to stick it in their eye by referring to this time of year as 'Holiday' is just plain stupid. I don't observe Christmas, but I'll admit that the PC 'Holiday' crap is annoying...

I just hope none of the people complaining about their holiday sale that starts before Thanksgiving also complain about how the Christmas shopping season keeps starting earlier and earlier.

I’ve always found this issue kind of silly. Maybe that’s because I live in the desert and nobody says “merry Christmas” when temps are above 75. It never feels like Christmas here, unless the weather stinks.
