Web censorship bill sails through Senate committee
Daily Caller ^ | 11/19/2010 | Sam Gustin

Posted on 11/19/2010 5:41:04 AM PST by markomalley

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed “central to the activity” of the site — regardless if the website has actually committed a crime. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) is among the most draconian laws ever considered to combat digital piracy, and contains what some have called the “nuclear option,” which would essentially allow the Attorney General to turn suspected websites “off.”

COICA is the latest effort by Hollywood, the recording industry and the big media companies to stem the tidal wave of internet file sharing that has upended those industries and, they claim, cost them tens of billions of dollars over the last decade.

unanimously approved

The powers-that-be in BOTH so-called "major" parties are getting their hinies kicked by the citizenry, an increasingly well-informed citizenry, ON THE WEB.

They control virtually all other forms of communication, the ones that require very large sums of money to operate or access.

Of course they're going to go after the web.

The American people had better not give them a single inch in this fight. The fate of the republic may well depend on it. I'm not kidding.

This is a a bill on which to demonstrate bipartisan spirit .

And we are all too familiar with that one-way spirit, aren't we?

Translations can still be in copyright. Most Bible publishers don’t make a fuss, but they like acknowledgment. Safer to just use the KJV.

“Many people thought the election would slow the leftists down. It has only convinced them they must try harder.”

************************************************************

I say let the radical leftists keep trying harder to ram through their ultra-communist agenda... They’ll only get further shellacked in the 2012 elections.

And if they continue to double down after that, then they’ll get slaughtered again in 2014.

They’re essentially guaranteeing the extinction of the Democrat party.

I just figured at least those would have voted for it, since they were cosponsors.

Don’t we have safeguards here to prevent copyrighted material from being posted by the uninformed? Protects against trolls trying to get FR in trouble as well? And against agents provacateurs?

I know, I know, if we allow them to grab this power they will find a way to use it.

Looks like they have saved their most subversive bills for the lame duck session. While hinting about other bills being passed that are not so destructive as this and the food bill.

Where are the Republicans on this committee?

I got an email last night which indicated that John Cornyn (R-TX) is in on this treachery.

But this is aimed at the elections. Every time I hear someone say “let them go ahead” I get worried.

I been saying for years that a P2P solution would be ideal for FR.

No censorship, no server costs, same control the admin mods now have. P2P and encryption is a great combination. Will work as an add-on to browsers.

“Sounds like the end of conservaive internet sites - pretty soon Freepers will be gone. Townhall.com hotair, drudgereport and so on and so forth. It has been nice knowing you all. how much longer we are allowed to speak to one another will be determined. Wait a moment there is a government car driving up, there a two men in it and they have a very big scissors and they are now coming to the door. i better send this quick, they are breaking down the door ....”

*************************************************************

Seriously, there is no way the leftists will ever be able to pull this off without a TITANIC backlash. Not only would conservatives storm Washington in record numbers, but corporate America is not going to stand by and let the feds destroy a multi-billion dollar empire in talk radio and conservative news sites.

Besides, wouldn’t passing a bill like this be a flagrant violation of the First Amendment?

I despise the current administration with an unbridled passion.

“They’re essentially guaranteeing the extinction of the Democrat party.”

They don’t care. once they get the power they are fine with throwing dissenters into prison.

or that genital and rectal probes would be allowed for the government.

I favor genital and rectal probes for the government. Not BY our semi-civil serpents, but FOR them, sure.

Neither side likes free speech. No state ever has.

The founders knew this, and to be honest had a habit of ignoring the First Amendment when they felt it necessary (the Alien and Sedition act for starters).

Because, as you know, anyone who will take something if it's free, will ALWAYS buy it if they can't, especially at the prices these tone-deaf turdheads would charge if they thought they had a captive market.
