Joe Scarborough has a decidedly cynical take on Sarah Palin's public musings about the possibility of a 2012 presidential run. The Morning Joe host asserts that Palin knows she can't win and won't run.
According to Scarborough, Palin is in it for the money, and is engaging in open speculation about a run for the mercenary purpose of keeping her brand alive.
Joe offered his jaded view on today's Morning Joe after the show aired a clip of Palin telling Barbara Walters that she believed she could defeat Pres. Obama.

"And so as I thought about this announcement that I wouldn't run for re-election and what it means for Alaska, I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks... travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade - as so many politicians do. And then I thought - that's what's wrong - many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and "milk it". I'm not putting Alaska through that..."
My God, does she really believe that once she became a lame duck she had no choice but to behave this way or quit?
By this standard of character every term-limited politician should quit.
Of course this reasoning is nonsense. Many if not most politicians with over two years to go in their term (the term that they sought) spend their energies working for the people who elected them...not galavanting at their expense. Hell, most of them keep at it right up to their last day in office.
I post on a large fitness site that has over 6 million registered users. At any given time there is 300-400k people viewing the site. There is a political forum and on a recent poll, I can't remember the exact figure, but maybe 15-20% of the people who said they would vote for Palin. FR is not America (sadly). Most Americans are middle of the road/leaning slightly right.
The $2 million the state had spent is a fly fart in a hurricane..they probably spend more than that on coffee filters in the gov't employee lounges.
If Clinton was able to raise a private legal defense fund then Palin could have also.
As other have said Palin would be better off as a RNC head or raising money.
Among the Conservatives I know (most of my family and friends) and the Republicans I know (many) she is interesting but not at all POTUS material.
Among the dems I know (also many) she is poison. If any of them were to want not to vote for obama a second time they would never see Palin as an option. They would hold their nose and vote for the boy-king again.
A cackle of freepers will rise to condemn me personally for pointing this out but they are children so I couldn't care less.
We WON the Women's Vote!
We WON the Women's Vote!
We WON the Women's Vote!
They said the GOP will never do that!
Same people says Palin can't win General Election
They said the same about REAGAN
HEY, Puppies I was There,
PALIN IS OUR MVP, so was Reagan!
Palin and I believe she can beat Obama. We’ll have to wait and see if another true conservative shows up who has the backing and charisma of Sarah.
See a few out there I like, but no one surpassing Sarah yet.
Go Back To the HOLE You came out from.
THIS IS A RIGHTWING SITE, GET OUT!
Yeah, you sound like you would have the kind of friends that you described in your post.
Woo hoo!! FR is Palin Country!!

Well buddy. Lets just wait and see where the chips fall. I think you are underestimating Palin. But lets wait and see.
Many Neocons are not Jewish. John Bolton is Lutheran and a committed internationalist in his foreign policy beliefs. I’m a American nationalist. If that makes me an anti-Semite in your book so be it.
Would you prefer it if her family were driven into bankruptcy by the Left and their stooges? Or if she stayed on as Gov. only to become a impotent and powerless lame duck?
Actually, I’m somewhat tired of people bringing up her resignation. Sure it may not have been a good idea, but what’s done is done. Also, here is a excerpt from her resignation speech. Perhaps you can point to inconsistencies with the facts of the situation at the time:
“...Some say things changed for me on August 29th last year - the day John McCain tapped me to be his running-mate - I say others changed.
Let me speak to that for a minute.
Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice. Over the past nine months Ive been accused of all sorts of frivolous ethics violations - such as holding a fish in a photograph, wearing a jacket with a logo on it, and answering reporters questions.
Every one - all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. Weve won! But it hasnt been cheap - the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to opposition research - thats money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers - or safer roads. And this political absurdity, the politics of personal destruction ... Todd and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesnt cost them a dime so theyre not going to stop draining public resources - spending other peoples money in their game.
Its pretty insane - my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more politics as usual, but THIS isnt what anyone had in mind for ALASKA.
If I have learned one thing: LIFE is about choices!
And one chooses how to react to circumstances. You can choose to engage in things that tear down, or build up. I choose to work very hard on a path for fruitfulness and productivity. I choose NOT to tear down and waste precious time; but to build UP this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic, free people!
Life is too short to compromise time and resources... it may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: Sit down and shut up, but thats the worthless, easy path; thats a quitters way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and go with the flow.
Nah, only dead fish go with the flow.
No. Productive, fulfilled people determine where to put their efforts, choosing to wisely utilize precious time... to BUILD UP.
And there is such a need to BUILD up and FIGHT for our state and our country. I choose to FIGHT for it! And Ill work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and LIFE... Ill work for and campaign for those PROUD to be American, and those who are INSPIRED by our ideals and wont deride them.
I WILL support others who seek to serve, in or out of office, for the RIGHT reasons, and I dont care what party theyre in or no party at all. Inside Alaska - or Outside Alaska.
But I wont do it from the Governors desk.
Ive never believed that I, nor anyone else, needs a title to do this - to make a difference... to HELP people. So I choose, for my State and my family, more freedom to progress, all the way around... so that Alaska may progress... I will not seek re-election as Governor.
And so as I thought about this announcement that I wouldnt run for re-election and what it means for Alaska, I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks... travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade - as so many politicians do. And then I thought - thats whats wrong - many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and milk it. Im not putting Alaska through that - I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! ? Thats not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old politics as usual. I promised that four years ago - and I meant it.
Its not what is best for Alaska.
I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is unconventional and not so comfortable.”
“My God, does she really believe that once she became a lame duck she had no choice but to behave this way or quit?”
Well, she probably felt that if she became a lame duck, then what would be the point of staying in office if she couldn’t do anything? It might be a mistake, granted, but that’s what she felt.
Also, bear in mind that the charges cost her family $500,000 at a time when she and Todd combined made only about $200,000 a year max, if I’m not mistaken. They even had to take a second mortgage out on their house. She was probably also afraid her family might be driven into bankruptcy.
“Among the Conservatives I know (most of my family and friends) and the Republicans I know (many) she is interesting but not at all POTUS material.”
While I like her and think she might be a good Pres., I admit that sometimes I have doubts (for lack of a better way to put it) Besides, she may not run for the spot anyways. I think that she’d definetely be a good Secretary of Energy though.
“Among the dems I know (also many) she is poison. If any of them were to want not to vote for obama a second time they would never see Palin as an option. They would hold their nose and vote for the boy-king again.”
Well, they’re Liberals, so what would you expect? :-)
But seriously, I’m kind of sick of people harping on her decision to step down, or quit if you prefer. Sure, it may have been a mistake, but what’s done is done.
“That is the issue. Obama won with the independents and the youth votes. I do not see those two defining sectors doing a complete one-eighty and voting for his polar opposite.”
Well, if she comes to show a degree of competence, that might change. Still, I bet that many of those independents and young feel like suckers.
It ain’t what Palin’s opponents don’t know that bothers me. It’s what they do know that just ain’t necessarily so.

That's right...I have good friends of all kinds...that's how I know what's happening in America outside FR...too bad for you if you don't.

Not all the dems are liberals just like all the GOP is not conservative. It's those old-school dems who would turn on obama if there were an option other than palin.

Get used to it if she runs, it is her achilles heel and the MSM will hammer it hard.
And, you're right, it was not a good idea...it was bone-headed.
What's done is done? Come on...we are measured by what we do, those who seek to govern us especially.
From your description you seem to have little variety among your friends, that is why it was noteworthy, they seem atypical since Palin has 82% approval among conservatives/republicans, and such high favor among conservative freepers.
