San Francisco plans tolls between Peninsula and the city (Coming Soon? congestion pricing)
Mercury News ^ | 11/17/10 | Mike Rosenberg

Peninsula residents are upset about a proposal to charge commuters $6 each weekday to enter and exit San Francisco to the south, calling the plan "a slap in the face," "a crazy idea" and "ridiculous."

Already dealing with some of the nation's highest gas prices and, in some cases, hefty parking fees, drivers crossing the San Mateo County-San Francisco border would pay rush hour tolls to fund local transportation upgrades and, in theory, reduce traffic jams, under a proposal by San Francisco officials.

Officials said they would spend $60 million to $100 million to set up the electronic system, coupled with local transit improvements, starting in 2015. It would be the first local "congestion pricing" system in the country and could begin as a 6-to-12-month pilot program that, if successful, could become permanent.

Under the plan, drivers leaving or entering San Francisco at the southern border would pay $3 from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and another $3 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, with a daily cap of $6. Commuters would pay up to $130 per month, or $1,500 in a year, if the tolls last that long.

If coming from the East Bay you end up paying the Bay Bridge toll plus this potential commuter charge.

If you are STUPID enough to live in the “Bay Area” of that cesspool of a “State” known as “California” then YOU are beyond hope.

San Francisco people love paying tolls. Income taxes, tolls, user fees, anything that feeds government and makes it bigger. They can’t get enough of it.

The funny thing is San Fran isn't even all that nice weather wise. It's far from the climate of "Southern California".

It's actually Asian money driving some bay area growth, keeping the peninsula population up and the RE prices up.

Alot of tech money on the southern end.

Relatively speaking this is a bright spot in CA.

Chang said the toll would generate $60 million to $80 million in profits each year and would be spread out on projects to improve roads, transit, and bicycle and pedestrian networks.

Note to Ms. Chang.

The toll would generate toxic debt, and absolutely no (zero) "profits". Ever.

Very good people will flee for other states, and, once gone, the real wealth generators would have no interest in returning.

That said, I hope you do this, and soon. Some of you (not YOU of course) would learn a valuable lesson, as your (one great, but now filthy) city corrodes into financial oblivion.

If you have money to spare, these tolls will actually be a bargain. If they actually reduce congestion, you could save a lot of commute time.

So...you have to pay to enter the city? I don’t go there today and it’s free. If they do this, they need to be refused any state support for the area. All Californians have their tax money go to these cities as it is.

These dolts assume behavior will remain the same after this ridiculous tax passes. Businesses will leave, people will drive through residential neighborhoods, etc.

By this post it is obvious that you are the one who has given up, and is therefore beyond hope.

Any amount of traffic reduced will be offset by the tolls themselves, which cause additional congestion.

Well in San Diego on I-15 they are talking about allowing cars that don’t comply with the HOT lane requirements to pay a toll to use them to Express Themselves around the City.

All this stuff will be coming for sure once Moonbeam is sworn into office.

If they want to do something USEFUL for city residents in the way of tolls, they would set up armored booths charging $5 to get into, and $25 to get OUT of Hunters Point/Bay View, with an exemption for shipyard workers...and build a wall.
