Openings Give Obama Chance to Shape Military - mass exodus of military brass "virtually unheard of"

Here's one place with plenty of job openings: the "E" Ring of the Pentagon.

In the next several months, the secretary of defense and four of the six uniformed members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are expected to retire.

This kind of mass exodus of military brass is "virtually unheard of," said John Ullyot, a Republican strategist and former spokesman for the Senate Armed Services Committee. "It's very rare to have so many service chiefs up" all at once, he said.

"Even in peacetime this would be a lot of turnover, a lot of change for the biggest part of the discretionary budget. But in wartime it's even more complicated and needs to be done with great care to ensure that there's a smooth transition," Ullyot said.

The changes in command come as President Barack Obama faces major decision points in the Afghanistan war and prepares to joust with a new, more adversarial Congress over defense spending and his intention to lift the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays.

"This is where the president makes a lasting impact upon defense policy," said retired Army Col. and military analyst Kenneth Allard, referring to the Joint Chiefs.

obama “shape the military”? hardly

these military officers are not tenured for life like Supreme Court Justices

If obama appoints a jackass to a high level military job, he’ll get fired the day the next President takes office
Kinda like what happened to Sestak

Who wants to work for Obama after retirement age? I don’t blame them.

"...But in wartime it's even more complicated and needs to be done with great care to ensure that there's a smooth transition...to the coming police state, where officers aren'y too picky about the parts of the Contitution that are adhered to, and those that are not.

Methinks being in the military under a president who hates the military cannot be a fulfilling career.

Oh great... a politicized Joint Chiefs Staff to foist a political agenda on the Republic and the next President.

Recall that during the Clinton years there were many field officers not re-upping. Captains and majors were heading out the door in numbers in the mid 90’s.

The next president is going to have his hands full, just like Reagan did!

Unfortunately, to the victor goes the spoils. The old elections have consequences saying.

To be fair, a good number of those were due to the post-Cold War cuts of the early 1990s, before Clinton arrived. I went to the deactivations of several DIVISIONS during that period.

every newly elected potus has the prerogative to expect the retirement or reassignment of high ranking military brass to make way for his own team. or HER own team.

bambi may get one Elena Kagan in a top service job - but not all of them.

“...where officers aren’y too picky about the parts of the Contitution that are adhered to, and those that are not.”

After 40 or so years of PC culture in the military it may not be too hard to find officers whose relationship with Logic and Reason is on a par with a huge number of the judiciary. Pretty scary actually...

Obastard needs to be forced to “resign” and then all his crimes made public, including his non-eligibility.

This has to happen.

Most people don’t even vote for a president based on military competence. It’s sickening.
