Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, the likely incoming speaker of the House, told reporters today he will break with recent tradition and not use a military jet to fly back and forth between Washington D.C. and his district.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., currently travels in an Air Force Gulfstream V, following in the footsteps of her Republican predecessor, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, who used Air Force planes to travel after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Military planes were ruled essential to ensure security of the speaker, who is second in the line to the president, but Boehner said Tuesday he felt safe enough flying commercial.
I have talked to our security folks about the security that is involved in my new role, Boehner told reporters on Wednesday. But over the last 20 years, I have flown back and forth to my district on a commercial aircraft and Im going to continue to do that.
Last year, the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch obtained government documents that showed the Gulfstream V costs $6,000 per hour to operate.
More on the same topic from a couple of hours ago.

And, this POS actually had the balls to ask for a larger plane.
Awesome!!!
heh heh heh It makes Pelosi look like an royal azz, too!
I don’t mind him using a Gulfstream. As a citizen I do expect that if anything happened to the P and VP the Speaker has the means to be immediately flown to where he needs to be. I hope if he does this there are contingency plans for any nearby Air Force base to be able to pick him up immediately if needed.
My problem with Pelosi was using it as her own private airline for friends and family.
Is he going to let the Left publish his nude body scans on the Net, or is he going to "opt out" for a nice firm crotch and ass grab?
So far... so good. He needs a Marshall on board whenever he flies.
LLS
Does he have any SS protection?
“I just flew in from Dayton, and boy are my arms tired.”
Flying in/out of Columbia SC in the 70s & 80s it was not unusual to see US Rep.Floyd Spence walking through the airport, by himself & carrying his own luggage. Always acknowleged other travelers with a smile & wave.
Lovely man. RIP
I don't suppose the flights from Cinncinnati to D.C. are usually packed.
A step in the right directon. Kudos to Boehner. But...I agree with the air marshall on board. Muzzies could target his plane.
Also, he has to have contingency plans in an emergency..which I am sure they will do.
Nancy doesnt travel like Hastert!!! Horsepoop on that comment.
In 2006 Nancy whined for a BIIIIIGGG VIP jet when she became house speaker, one befitting “the world’s most powerful woman”
and Bush the patrician gentleman gave her one, after all, we were paying, not him
I remember
“... second in line to the president ...”
Somebody better tell Joe Biden that the administration lost bigger than they thought last Tuesday.
I believe succession goes first to the VP if something happens to the Pres and second to the Speaker.
I don’t care about such cosmetic nonsense. All I care about is that John Boehner and the new crop of GOP Representatives DO NOT compromise with the liberals and RINOs. Boehner and crew had better realize that they are the tip of the spear, on the front lines waiting for the next wave of reinforcements to arrive in 2012. They cannot allow any compromises, they must show strength, unity, and a singular purpose to the nation of voters. No one is going to care whether Boehner flies a commercial jet or Gulfstream if he allows the Obama-engineered multi-trillion dollar government expansion to continue. NO COMPROMISES!
Expect Pelozi to say, “Well, since no one is using the Speaker’s plane, can I keep using it and call it the former Speaker’s plane?”
Let's see if he persists in his good intentions after he gets crotch-groped by a security dolt for the first time.
John Boehner’s Annual Airfare Budget:
$100,000
Annual Interest on the Debt by 2020
$1,000,000,000,000
You got it fixed there, John.
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting. /s
