Why is FoxNews saying Murkowski is ahead? [vanity]

Posted on 11/10/2010 9:38:38 AM PST by Ruth C

I keep listening to FoxNews, and their reporters are saying things like: Joe Miller gained some votes but is about 5% down. 5% down from whom? He is ahead of all who were actually on the ballot and the write-ins haven't been tabulated yet.

I know this is a vanity, but it is just driving me crazy so I had to post something.

It seems FoxNews reporters are taking that 5% down based on Miller's count to date at 35.28% and the total write-in ballots of 40.21%. Well, do they know something we don't? Did Murkowski get ALL the write-in votes and no other write-in candidate got any?

This kind of stuff drives me nuts. It is inaccurate and seems to say Murkowski is winning when we have NO idea who got what yet. I sent an email, but will that make them change how they report these results. Grrrrrr!!!

Because they are truly stupid.

Don’t let it bother you.

They don’t think before they read what’s on the teleprompter.

Just be glad they are not reporting on aviation. NOTHING is more infuriating than listening to mass media people trying to report on aviation. Staggering ignorance and stupidity.

Ruth...

I voted for Joe Miller, so I understand your frustration. However...

Most write-in votes will be for Murkowski, since she campaigned strongly to have that done. No one else did. The probability of other write-ins having anywhere near the number of write-ins as Murkowski is very small. This would include people writing in names like Mickey Mouse in disgust about all the candidates, which happens sometimes, but wouldn’t happen here, as the Miller supporters were strongly in favor of their candidate, the Murkowski supporters in favor of her, and the Democrats split between Murkowski and Scott McAdams. There just wasn’t a strong “they all suck” vote up here.

I witnessed this thing first hand, and it is sad but true that Miller ran a poor campaign and Murkowski did a masterful job. I don’t like her, but I saw how she was able to cobble together a strong coalition, advertise the hell out of telling people how to write in a name on the ballot, and keep Miller off balance. Yeah, another RINO isn’t good news, but it’s the reality on the (snowy) ground up here.

I think the presumption is that Murkowski (sp?) will get the bulk of the write-in votes.

She very well might.

Because it is safe to assume that since Murkowski ran an unprecedented write-in campaign that most of those write-in ballots would be for her.

Why would people write in Joe Miller if he was already on the ballot?

Look, Miller was my favorite Senate Candidate this cycle, and I really want him to win, and he still has some chance, BUT his chance isn’t as good as some here might want to pretend. I don’t believe in pretending just because it might make you feel good for the moment. The reality is, Miller is in a bad spot.

I pray that he can pull it out, but I will not fool myself into thinking that his win is likely.

Here in Kansas, we got a Mickey and a Daffy for a county commissioner seat.

Somehow I think this will hinge on what spellings will be accepted.

If the absentees continue on this path, Joe will have narrowed the margin by 2,800 votes or more, leaving him approximately 10,000 votes behind the number of "write in" votes. That's roughly a 5.1% deficit for Miller, down from 6.6%.

Your post is sane, and contains a great deal of common sense. This is a rare occurrence on the internet. Thank you.

Maybe because they, like me, believe Murcowski will be deemed to get whatever percent of the write-ins she needs, even if that’s 127%?

I think they are assuming Murkowski will get the lion’s share of the write in’s. They have no clue how many are misspelled or not checked or maybe somebody’s brother in law was written in, but they feel it will be in the 90+% area. Also the judge, so far, is siding with Lisa and will be generous with “close enough” votes. When you introduce “human discretion” into the vote counting, you can count on trouble. It could be as bad as a checked box and “LM” in the write in to be a vote for Lisa. Miller has his votes and knows what the exact number is. Maybe some outstanding absentee’s or something, but pretty much he’s counted.

They are going by the numbers first tallied of write-in votes with some semblance of Murkowski’s name on them I believe.

It is a lot like listening to a conservative radio station and then the news reader chimes in and reads something completely wrong and left-wing.

example, the markets taking off last Wednesday was credited to the Feds pumping and not the election on am750 hear in Atlanta. I almost screamed.

Basically working under the assumption that some % of the write-ins are not for Moocowski, and that the rest are. My guess is that they’re estimating 80-90% of write-ins being for daddy’s little girl.

I’m encouraged with the way the absentees are breaking for Joe. My understanding is the military ballots counting won’t begin until the 17th. That’s where Joe really needs to make up some ground but I’m having difficulty figuring out how many military ballots were sent out.

I think Joe needs to be within 6,000-7,000 votes when the write in counting begins to have a decent chance.

Wasn’t it ruled early on that the spelling doesn’t have to be correct for the write-in to count for Mercowsky?

So she should be put in charge of emptying the waste cans in the Senate and that’s it.
