(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.
CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

"It's spectacular
It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".
Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.
A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.
On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.
Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.
"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine
to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.
Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.
Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.
Ok so why is the military saying it was a ballistic missile launch?
Irrelevant, as millions saw this event, and likely every pilot and their passengers within 100+ mile radius....
I looked at those and then looked at the missile launch video again as well. The end of the video show fire at the business end of the missile. It is not sun glint, the sun is backlighting as it sets in the west.
If this was an accident, then Obama is behind it. What a coincidence the man who wants to rid America of it’s nuclear weapons just happens to have an “accidental firing” of one of them happen on his watch! Now he has “evidence” just how dangerous it is for America to keep all of these weapons around!
Are you only reading and responding to your ping list???
Seriously. Are you not reading the releases from the Pentagon and other news sources??
Dude, step back from your ping list for a couple minutes.
White color has nothing to do with it. Consider the light source at that time of day? Do you still think that a missile plume or contrail would be white? Go back and study the links and images on my other posts. Contrails due to varying weather conditions can vary considerably.
Then there are the colorful chem-trails that only happen around sunrise and sunset. I think they’re pretty neat looking, even though we’ll all die in a few days from alien gasses. On the other hand, maybe Obama decided to nuke North Korea as a security measure?
[I can’t resist a little foxhole humor sometimes.]
Sorry, I didn’t answer your question. Yes, if it was an aircraft, they would have been able to say so by now. Also, there would have been more than that one visual key.
You are the one here that doesn’t seem to get it, so go away or please be quiet. Are we supposed to believe you or our eyes?
Going back to July 1996 and the various witness reports that were made public this was one of the more credible ones. The NTSB hadn't gone into full cover up mode yet.

I breathe chem-trails in for breakfast! Huffin’ chemtrails, of yea!
Saw that- thanks.
I’m baffled.. not sure whether to be furious or fearful.
Actually, that site DOES have some compelling photos.
It could very well be just a contrail.
That would explain why no one at NORAD and its many sensor sites didn’t see it.
If so, what a story in its own right! Talk about a viral phenomenon!!!!!
in hiding with Mark Dayton?
Those don’t even remotely look like missile launches. Not even close.
Your still shots are not in the same category, they are a straw man argument.
