(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.
CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

"It's spectacular
It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".
Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.
A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.
On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.
Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.
"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine
to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.
Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.
Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.
I could be wrong...
LOL ; }
I must have missed the memo.
(facepalm) SORRY! Jeezzzz wtf was I thinking?
Good god thats embarrassing.
( ugh )
“It’s a good thing that of the potential million + witnesses, none shined a green laser at the launch vehicle. That would have gotten them in series trouble. “
I recall this rumor flying around talk radio back when Challenger exploded in ‘86. I was 12 back then ... and, yes, I actually listened to talk radio back then (KDKA here in Pittsburgh). I vividly recall a person calling up, with a horribly fake accent, and saying that he saw a laser hit the Space Shuttle before the explosion. They were trying to pin it on Reagan’s “Star Wars” initiative. What was worse were more people called in with the same story.
Hmmmm ... should be ASR9 or ASR11 (RADAR) data available on this event ...
Who am I gonna believe? Trustworthy you, or my damned LYING eyes?
Oh no no!!! You are totally right. WTF was I thinking. I need to go beat my head up against a brick wall brb. Damn... just DAMN....
Known SLBM countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine-launched_ballistic_missile ):
US, Russia, UK, France, China, India
Anticipated SLBM countries (coming soon to an EMP event near you):
North Korea, Iran
Vote your Scenario:
Scenario-1: China is agitating India, Zero gave India OK to fire from Calif coast to “tell” China to back off ...
Scenario-2: China is treatening dollar collapse via “we’ll buy no more US bonds” ... so Zero lights off a candle ...
Scenario-3: China or Russia has hacked US, UK, FR or India sub system to launch SLBM “without auth” ...
Scenario-4: China launches off US coast to let US know it is not happy with QE2 ...
Scenario-5: A coup has occured in the US, but we don’t know it yet, and someone else now has the controls
The following are very unlikely scenarios, because IF they could launch, then they would have directed that SLBM 200 miles above Kansas:
S-6: Iran now has a SLBM capability
S-7: North Korea now has a SLBM capability
What we do know - the first “plausible” explanation out of the MSM or Pentagon will not be the truth ...
Vote your favorite Scenario
The sun usually sets in the west, well it will today anyway.
No biggy...
It’s appeared to launch close to the opposite direction what Vandenberg launches when conducting their tests.
I agree, but at the same time am aware of certain religious prophecies perilously close to this. I happen to be restocking and testing my emergency supplies and equipment anyway.
Well, on the other hand, you didn't say anything terribly shillish. I'll give ya that. :)
Oh, I can just imagine it now...
A letter arrives at the White House, opening with, “Greetings in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Wise...”. It then goes on to name several specific demands, probably including the release of Islamic terrorists from several nations, the complete withdrawal of all US forces from any Islamic nation, probably a demand for a beggaring amount of cash, and ending with a threat that an American city will disappear in 48 hours unless their demands are met.
You think the PTB would let US know about that?
The gist is that if a person would have shined a green laser at the launch vehicle, they would have been quickly hunted down and arrested.
Imagery from WSR-88D sites would seem to be next to useless in observing this event, with scan-data (volume scan data) only available every 10 mins or so ... there is an outside chance one of the ‘volume scans’ caught some of the missile/contrail.
The WSR-88D’s out there seem to have been in clear-air mode at the time from what little RADAR imagery I’ve looked at so far.
It looked like a stinger launch to me.
Chalk it up to a moment of pure unadulterated stupidity. I would blame dyslexia.. but yea... No that was me just being STOOPID.
Indeed. Thanks for the much needed laugh.
It is hard to say with something like this, which is worse - Us firing it and the Pentagon covering with a ridiculously laissez faire attitude, or someone else firing it and the Pentagon STILL responding with the same attitude : o
Shakes head. They really do think we are that stupid : |
