Der Spiegel reports on the growling-ever-louder Indonesian Merapi volcano in an article titled: Geologists Warning of Mega-Eruption of Merapi.
“The Merapi eruptions are becoming more violent and the big bang could be just ahead. The Indonesian volcano has been spewing 800°C ash clouds for days.”

Pictures are just awful/sad.
Merapai is an extremely dangerous volcano with global implications.
From the excellent climate observational website www.iceagenow.com:

Merapai has 300% more magma than Tambora in 1815.
It is just awful. My heart goes out to those poor souls.
That last photo with the patch of green was very interesting on a physical level (why the green patch) and a philosophical way (there is hope).
Although it sounds like this thing is just getting started, and that patch of green might soon be buried under 20 feet of seering-hot pyroclastic flow.
AlGore, pay attention.....
Mother Nature might be ready to show you what really causes global level climate changes.
I hope for the best for those in the area.
Buy home insulation now.(also light bulbs, ammo, McDonald’s toys)
Common knowledge, I know. It was even made into an interesting movie once upon a time. Living near a volcano looks like a real bad idea, mostly.
I have a book about Krakatoa - from the 70’s I suppose. Lots of old photos, drawings, paintings and historical information such as ship logs, etc..
It is on the scientific side of things with lots of barometric pressure measurements from around the world (to measure the air blast!), sea level readings from around the world (to measure the tsunami, which locally was 90 feet plus tall. (Earthquake-caused tsunami’s can only reach about 30 feet IIRC). But a huge landslide, or volcano - can cause much larger tsunamis.
Nasty stuff.
The inhabitants of the region wouldn't have it any other way.
“spelt in error as” is much preferred in certain circles.
One hell of a blast!
Prayers for suffering innocents.

It’s not like we could or would nuke the thing to collapse it, not that that would help much.
I think its going to go like Krakatoa, but not much larger, and that is me hoping it won’t be larger. All the numbers, the time since the last eruption in that area all seem to point to something happening very soon.
Would be the least of your worries. Especially if the eruption caused a subsidence tsunami...
Unlike a fracture tsunami caused by an uplift in the crust, the wave generated would not break on hitting the shore - like the tsunami some years back off Indonesia.
This wave would be a standing wave many kilometers broad and high at the crest, traveling at 300-600 mph and only break only when hitting some higher structure - like a mountain range.
And the “ripples” would likely travel around the world inundating most coastal cities and most of Alaska.
Returning to the 7th Century might seem like Heaven... Think worldwide chaos and people everywhere in a state of shock like nothing seen in modern times.

Like Blam said, it’s always something.
