Former President George W. Bush says it was a "huge mistake" to let himself be photographed looking from Air Force One down at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Bush reflected on the iconic photograph during an interview with NBC's Matt Lauer to promote his forthcoming memoir, "Decision Points." The photo was published widely and only reinforced the view that the Bush administration didn't act quickly enough or fully grasp the severity of the problems on the ground in New Orleans after the levees broke.

An vociferous army was assembled for the downfall of Bush and all and all issues were blown out of proportion. Everything and anything he did right and wrong was viciously attacked.
Obama had a far greater issue with the Oils spill that has been swept under the ocean. Do those same social rightists voice an opinion against him?
Ummmmm, I think 16 years of Slick Willy would have been a bad thing. I don’t doubt that would have happened.

I remember pictures of Bush, Blanco and Nagin riding around downtown New Orleans on a army Jeep, checking out the damages.

I was practically glued to my computer and tv before during and after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, and I never saw that photo before today.
We must remember that Terry McAuliffe had a conniption fit when a photo of W looking out of AF1 on September 11, 2001 was published. He went on all the DNCmedia and chastised the President for allowing that photo to be used for “political purposes.”
Matt Lauer’s approach to this AF1 photo is just an extension of the antipathy of anything that President Bush did or did not do during his time in office.
If he had made the crazy decision to land a presidential cavalcade in the midst of the flooding, with people sitting on their roofs waiting for Coast Guard helicopters to fetch them, just imagine the (justified) media uproar.
Liberals had to find a way to break through America’s connection with Bush and his causing the Hurricane disaster was it. They eat, sleep and breath their cult of power and control. Never Forget.

The scope of Katrina just overwhelmed everything available. And probably more importantly than anything; New Orleans is filled with shiftless people who refused to help their selves.
ANY other part of the nation would have made a much better outcome of this.
I still remember seeing the response by the people of San Francisco to the 1989 earthquake. I had just moved from there a few months before the earthquake, so I was pretty tuned in when this happened. People were helping each other out in a way I had never seen there. The city just changed immediately it seemed to get things taken care of. Everyone helped each other.
Not so in New Orleans. They sat around and waited for the government to come in wipe their butts.

Katrina was a mess made by Blanco, Nagin and the media. Period. Bush gave them several days warning and practically begged Blanco to declare a state of emergency so he COULD send in the national guard. She dragged her feet and Nagin stood around with one finger up his nose while pointing the other hand at every one but himself and his crybaby Police Chief. (whatever his name was) Meanwhile..the media pimped every single black person they could find... with a sob story and grievance against "tha man".
Elections have consequences and I guess Louisiana found that out in a big way. Unfortunately... we all continue to pay the price for their incompetence.
Geez, it’s not like he was pointing and laughing. That looked like a concerned posture to me.

How desperate is the president's predicament? Consider this exchange, noted by blogger Ed Morrissey, between MSNBC host Chris Matthews and Democratic pollster Mark Penn:
Penn: The president himself has to reconnect with the people. Remember, President Clinton reconnected through Oklahoma, right?
Matthews: Yeah, because of the bombing down there.
Penn: And the president right now seems removed. And it wasn't until that speech that he reclicked with the American public. Obama needs a similar--a similar kind of event.
The mind reels. What can one say to Mark Penn other than: Be careful what you wish for, because innocent Americans might get it.
I laugh every time I see a politician walk around a disaster scene "on the ground". They always have on the fake outdoorsy outfit, picked out by their handlers and fresh off the rack. Their head swivels around slowly taking in the scene, although they have no idea what they are looking at, or the first thing they would need to do to help out. Then in the pre-selected area with all cameras pointing at them, they proclaim how "I" will make things better.
The best thing politicians can do in a disaster is stay the heck out of the way so the professionals can do their jobs. Bush did the right thing at Katrina and he should stop apologizing for it.
Easy there, when asked if he authorized the water boarding his response was, “Damn right!”

Correct. He did get on the ground with Blanco and Nagin within 48 hours of this, but the media had their
‘narrative’ and they pushed it beyond the realm of truth.
Bush was caring, involved and on top of the matter, but the media pushed their story that was the opposite.
