NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft flew 700 kilometers, or 435 miles, from comet Hartley 2 on Thursday morning. These five images were the first snapshots returned from the probe more than 13 million miles away from Earth.
All five images were captured with Deep Impact's medium-resolution camera between 1358 GMT and 1401 GMT.

And suddenly, the probe went dark...
Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Ok. I take that back.
The top picture is a walrus.

You say there's another Hartley out there and he's in outer space? When can you come in for a session . . . .

I can make a hat, or a broache, or a teredactyl.

Very cool. You can model your own deep impact event using Purdue University's

I just did an impact calculation for the Hartley comet assuming it is ice and hits in about 3,000 feet of water about a 1,000 miles from the coast. Here is just the tsunami data:
The impact-generated tsunami wave arrives approximately 4.74 hours after impact. Tsunami wave amplitude is between: 5.49 meters ( = 18 feet) and 11 meters ( = 36 feet).

"Too bad our APOD guy left FR"I was wondering what happened to Sig. He left? Any reason why? I used to look forward to his ping every day.

Another great thing about the APOD list is that it has its own TOPIC as well as keyword, a real plum courtesy FR.

"Maybe you could drop him/her an email and pick up the ping list duties. Its a LOT easier to inherit one than to build one from scratch."I don't have an email for Sig. I'd be happy to keep up the list if I had it. That list was one of my favs. (I wonder if they still check their FR mail)
