Washington (CNN) -- His party got its clock cleaned in Tuesday's midterm elections, but President Barack Obama still remains competitive in some hypothetical 2012 presidential election matchups, especially against Sarah Palin, a new poll shows.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday also indicates that at the unofficial start of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the field of possible contenders appears wide open with no front-runner.
Twenty-one percent of Republicans say they would most likely support 2008 GOP White House candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for their party's 2012 presidential nomination, according to the poll.
The number is 20 percent for another 2008 Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Fourteen percent say they support Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, with 12 percent backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia.
The remaining candidates, whose names were all in single digits, are led by Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who also ran for the GOP presidential nomination the last time around, followed by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.
The poll's release comes as Santorum visits New Hampshire to give a speech about the midterm election results and the future of the Republican party. No one has yet to announce a bid for the GOP nomination.
In a possible general election showdown, Obama leads Palin 52-44 percent among all registered voters.

Unfortunately, a hypothetical person will not run against Obama. A real one will.
After seeing him perform during the oil spill, I’d love to see Jindal run.
Jindal might make US Senator from Louisiana, should he want it.
I look forward to seeing him in the Palin cabinet.
Romney/Rubio.
After seeing him perform during the oil spill, Id love to see Jindal run.

Which part did you like best? The part where he asked Obama for permission to deal with it, or the part where he got really angry when the permission was denied?
The really angry part will be awesome when we are frustrated by the UN or some random Moslem.
Since Romney and Rubio have opposing views on Roe v. Wade, The homosexual agenda, gun control and socialized medicine, I’m not sure that would be a good match.
Romney? Is this satire? Which of his socialist programs do you like the most?
Palin is the perfect candidate. She goes in after being fully tashed by the press. No stones were left unturned. She can hit the ground running on smearing and hitting Obummer on his record.
The Rats are going to give any challenger an anal exam like no other. Huckabee and Romney are going to look like Christine O’Donnell once the WH is done.
Well this is all interesting:
Huckabee leads on name recognition and the fact that she’s not Palin. He needs to go.
Palin has an incredibly vocal following which isn’t as big as that following likes to believe they are.
Ron Paul...again name recognition. He’s out to lunch.
Glad to see Romney didn’t make double digits. He is the worst possible candidate.
There is room to move into the void for a viable conservative candidate!
As much as I want sarah to go at it, if she does not, my pick is
Thune/Christie
I know he’s far too green and he’s quite young, but I gotta tell you, I like this Rubio guy.
Thune or Christie could easily beat Zero.
The others listed are retreads or have too high negative ratings.
We need to repeal DeathCare and need to select an electable true conservative to run against Zero.
It’s probably too early after their elections, but John Kasich and Marco Rubio would be pretty good candidates.
No Romney — EVER — for anything.
DeMint, Barbour, Pence or Daniels for me, but I’ll gladly support anyone who is not named Romney or Huckabee.
If I were going to Vote for Sarah it would have to be Palin/West ticket. Take it to the Feminazis and the liberal black americans.. And sit back and watch the heads explode all over.
No more RudyMcRombee’s, no milquetoast-wimps and NO Newt’s!
Let’s try a real conservative, for a change. Been a while.
