GOP senators fight over failure (Graham, Lott, RINOs slam DeMint as selfish "loser" but praise Kirk)

Long-simmering tensions within the Republican Party spilled into public view Wednesday as the pragmatic and conservative wings of the GOP blamed each other in blunt terms for the party’s failure to capture the Senate.

With tea party-backed candidates going down in Delaware, Colorado and Nevada, depriving Republicans of what would have been a 50-50 Senate, a bloc of prominent senators and operatives said party purists like Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) had foolishly pushed nominees too conservative to win in politically competitive states.

(snip)

Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott put it plainly: “We did not nominate our strongest candidates.”

Had Republicans run Castle in Delaware and establishment favorites Sue Lowden in Nevada and Jane Norton in Colorado, Lott said, Tuesday would have turned out different.

“With those three we would have won and been sitting at 50 [senators],” he observed.

Another high-profile senator went even further, placing the blame for the Senate GOP’s failure squarely at the feet of Graham’s South Carolina colleague, DeMint.

This Republican senator said that the tea party was the “big winner” by helping bring enormous energy behind GOP candidates Tuesday, but he said that “Sen. DeMint was the big loser.”

“It’s like you’re on the five-yard line ready to score and the quarterback calls the play and some member of your team tackles one of your members and keeps you from scoring,” the senator said. “We came tantalizingly close to a majority.”

“I’m completely mystified by it,” the senator said of DeMint’s tactics.

The senator credited House Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner for keeping House Republicans unified behind a common purpose but he said that DeMint took a selfish path that hurt the party’s common cause.

That won’t be good enough, however. The GOP power structure must be taken over, central committee by central committee, until people like Michael Steele are asking us if we want fries with that.

If Cornyn had his way we’d have Sestak (he’d beat Specter), Christ, and Conway. They just hate conservatives. Let’s groom Tim Johnson to beat Leslie in 2014

Demint 5 out of 11 (not bad) considering the states that were in play. It’s Colorado’s fought that there party is decimated (Buck loses by a few thousand votes). California is finished. The state is LOST. The states we won PA,WI, and FL are Obama states. I thought the GOP was just a regional party (the south). Demint ROCKS.

Rino’s have Kirk (Mr. Crap and trader)

It is odd that as Trent Lott “speaks out”, his old House seat finally went Reublican again after 21 years.

People in South Carolina maintain that Lidsey is allegely known to be Gay. If that is true, then we might understand why he appears terrified of the Demorat Smears and always sides with them at least as much as he pretends to maintain weak middle of the road progressive assaults on America.

Lets look at what Lott gave Us! A totally castrated wimpish Republican Majority that cowtailed to every demand the Rats screamed including his own resignation after making an innocuous statement at a Birthday Party. Lott is why a once proud party went to Hell! and suffered that horrendous defeat for America in November of 08, and earlier in 06!
Mike Castle was and still is for Cap and Tax, The Stimulus Failure, Amnesty and Free Trade across Borders for Drug Dealers and Terrorists! Castle never once challenged Biteme Biden for that Senator’s Seat when Christine did! The guy is a two bite low life who is no different the Arlen Sphincter! Good Ridance! Also, please note, Christine won 51 % of the Independants, which would have given her the Victory, except Castle and the GOP depressed the Republican turnout to a pathetetically low level never before seen in Delaware. It was Sabotage to give Castle the seat in the next election which is in two years if correct since this one was to fill Biteme’s last two years.

I think you're right.

Might force the House to impeach the Senate's majority leader, what do you think? After a long and embarrassing investigation, Senate trial to be scheduled for about 10 months before the 2012 general election?

Sound about right?

You can not win the Senate without moderate conservatives...all conservatives can not, and should not think alike..there are some posters here that call themselves conservatives. I would never let them speak for me.

I am a 74 year old conservative...the name calling in some posts sound like 12 year olds.

You are so very right! We MUST vote out the RINO’s and ANY Conservative who shows even a touch of RONOism disease!

FROM RINO LOTT:
“We did not nominate our strongest candidates.”

THE TRUTH:
The GOP did not support the Republican Primary candidates that the people chose! Did the GOP endorse O'Donnell, Angle, Ferina, Miller? NO!

Folks like Karl Rove blame Christine O’Donnell for not taking over the senate when in fact it was the elite who refused to recognize the strength of the conservative movement in Delaware.

If the elites had fingered a known commodity in the state of DE who was a conservative, then the door for a grass roots candidate would have been blocked.

As it was, they invited a conservative challenger and they got one.

Rove ‘s encouragement of liberal policies with Pres. Bush (NCLB and Harriet Myers, Dubai Ports etc) almost singlehandedly created the need for the Tea Party movement.

Being a South Carolina Republican is tough these days, one moment you are beaming with pride for Jim Demint, then you remember Lindsay Graham and want to puke.

Pretty please with sugar on top!

DeMint is in the US Senate, he would have to be a congressman to be the Speaker.
