It's official: Olin ammo production to Mississippi (Union drives 800 jobs out of Illinois)
St. Louis Post Disgrace ^ | November 3, 2010 | STEVE GIEGERICH

Posted on 11/03/2010 2:01:35 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

The Olin Corp. announced Wednesday that it will suspend production of centerfire ammunition at its plant in East Alton and re-locate the manufacturing operation to Oxford, Miss.

The move comes less than 24 hours after members of the union representing over Olin 800 workers rejected concessions that would have allowed them to keep their jobs.

"Our focus always has been on ensuring that we continue producing high-quality products for our customers in an increasingly competitive market," president and CEO Joseph D. Rupp said in a prepared statement.

"While I am disappointed that employees represented by the International Association of Machinists chose to reject a proposal that would have allowed us to remain competitive in East Alton, we look forward to expanding our existing operations in Mississippi."

Perhaps I should have been more specific. The innocent in this scanario I feel quite badly for.

“. . . workers opposing the contract called the elimination of the fifth week of vacation a major stumbling block.”

Plenty of vacation time now.

How about some Breaking hot-dang GOOD news. 1000 jobs manufacturing Winchester ammo coming to Mississippi.

Thank you, you yankee union idiots. We can always use more ammo and jobs down here.

“I buy a lot of the Winchester value packs for sporting clays.”

You are fortunate, as my shottie won’t cycle those things at all reliably. The Federal brand competing value pack does work, which tells me that the Winchester shells are a bit scant on powder in comparison to the Federal shells.

No doubt ammo will be better quality now with union gone.

May buy 3 cases now an tell em why.....

Stay safe.

Olin did the same thin Peterbilt of Madison, TN did a couple of years ago when, tired of union crap (two looooong strikew within 3 years), they decided to close the Madison plant permanently and move ALL the production to their NON-union Texas factory. Since the demand for trucks is waaaay down (from 92 trucks a day in Madison to 35), I am sure that the workers in Texas laid off from the downturn were more than happy to come back.

Will that ammo be big enough to kill a Black Bear?

Unions have the only mental midgets who by their own actions vote them selves out of an over payed job. If you create your own un-employment why should you be collecting funds from the system?

My thoughts exactly.

If only we charged higher tariffs on Chinese ammo, these jobs could have been saved.

Or at least a laptop theiving QB?

Gotta feel for Ole Miss students lately. Not only do they have to worry about their new QB stealing their laptop, now they have to worry about their new mascot stealing their pic-a-nic basket.

No, that’s not correct. If only we charged higher tariffs on urinal cakes from Pakistan, then these jobs would not have moved from Illinois to Mississippi.

I believe you're right wrt AMC. That stretch of the Mississippi was chock a block full of military bases from the Savanna Army Depot at the north to the Olin plant down in Alton.

Alton is one of those great little river towns that's hit hard times over the last few decades. It's a tourist town now but in days gone by they did lots of manufacturing as well as being a major Mississippi River Pilot hub. Barge traffic on that stretch of river is still very heavy.

It's also a beautiful place to boat, hunt, and fish. I've run that stretch of the Big Muddy a few times both on land and on water.

While I'm glad to see the Union take it in the shorts my State can ill afford to lose any more jobs. And Mrs. L and I have spent some wonderful weekends in that part of the State. People mostly have their heads screwed on straight believe it or not.

Interesting days my friend...

If Obama ever gets his way, companies will be prohibited from doing this.

If Ubama and the scumbag rats ever got their way, the entire country would be unionized and fully controlled by government regulation... Paid leave for tending to new babies, sick relatives and pets, mandatroy paid vacation, 35-hour work weeks, retire at 60 with full bennies, guaranteed no-fire employment if you remain with a company after the 6-month probationary period, etc., etc.

Any attempt at roll-backs and we could have national strikes and be as great as... France.
THAT is the ultimate goal of Ubama and the rats. ...to turn America into a Euro-style socialist welfare state.

I’m sure Masoli is being paid enough he doesn’t have to steal. Did you know Cam Newton was guilty of the same thing.

Cam Newton was arrested on Friday, November 21, 2008, on felony charges of burglary, larceny and obstruction of justice after allegedly purchasing a stolen laptop from a student at the University of Florida. He was subsequently temporarily suspended by the team after the laptop was in fact found
