Sorry State of Gun Control
New York Times ^ | October 31, 2010

Posted on 10/31/2010 10:42:07 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

As a new Congress looms, we suggest lawmakers travel to Washington by way of West Virginia and an obscure federal building called the National Tracing Center. There they can see workers laboring through unmanageably high backlogs of handwritten paper records submitted by the nation’s gun dealers. This is Congress’s handiwork — at the behest of the gun lobby and to the detriment of public safety.

Each year the center receives 300,000 inquiries from police officers’ trying to track weapons from tens of thousands of gun deaths. But it is prohibited, by law, from collecting gun ownership records through a modern computerized database. Instead, paper prevails in assorted scraps. Workers huddle over desks with tape and magnifying glass, while crime marches on.

The center’s plight was described in a Washington Post report detailing the insidious roadblocks and lethal damage wrought by bipartisan pandering to the gun lobby. Congress’s failure is also clear in the underfinancing and short staffing at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Beleaguered enforcement agents must monitor 115,000 firearms dealers with 600 agents — the same number as three decades ago.

Gun dealers can go as long as eight years between visits from inspectors. Meanwhile, the criminal minority of dealers who repeatedly claim “lost” and “stolen” inventory — less than 2 percent of retailers — are rarely shut down since lawbreakers are allowed to “sell” their businesses to family members.

The A.T.F. bureau has also been denied a permanent director as the Senate cowers before the gun lobby. Congress’s budgetary directives for the F.B.I. and D.E.A. total less than a score each. The A.T.F. gets 87.

Hey - I’ve just had a brainstorm -

How about the feds ENFORCE BORDER SECURITY LAWS and leave the citizens alone?

How about we eliminate funding for all of these citizen control offices and programs until the non-citizens are under control?

Our government is a farce.

Heh... Gun Control for the NYT means that only their reporters are allowed to carry guns or hire protection. These people are idiots, but at least they know it.

Another bunch of elitists that probably carry but want the rest of us peons to perish with the crime rate... Idiots all - whoops, that was redundant...

Its hard to count how often the Democrats have shot themselves in the foot with gun control. Its a vote repellent than empowers the GOP in election after election and yet they still cling to their stupid dream.

They don’t even try to hide it anymore. They want the right gone. Why not just simpoly state so? They come at us with the emotional argument...they do NOT even entertain the legal issues surrounding why the law is there and that the 20,000+ other laws are not being enforced. No, its always the same wiht leftists and marxists...make it emotional and take people of subject...this way they can, falsely, claim that the system is broke and tens of thousands (lie) of people will die.

I think the Democraps have kept their mouths shut regarding gun control because they knew of their demise, and they are saving their “Silver Bullets” as a last resort, and ammo for future battles.

They just have to remind Democrats of an issue none of them wants to hear.

How’s that for an out-of-touch MSM?

Gun sales have been going through the roof since 0bama was elected, but with no apparent increase in crime. I guess this is very disappointing to WaPo and NYT.

Meanwhile, in the UK, gun crime has increased nearly 50%. I guess we should be more like them.

The reason these laws exist is to protect against tyranny. The goal of these Tyrannical bastards is:
  1. Registration
  2. Confiscation
These Authoritarian bastards want de facto registration via the computerization of all gun transfer records. Then, they dream, when they someday attain sufficient power, they can finally attempt to implement their agenda of outright confiscation.

At which point these Tyrants will drown in their own Blood...

It's not particularly important where these guns come from or whether they are traced or not. This is just an effort to demonize the gun as opposed to the criminal who uses it, so they can generate hysterical statistics in order to manipulate the People into submitting to their Tyranny.

Bring it on, you marxist pigs!

If these deluded Statists want to see the Democratic Party become even more irrelevant and worthless, they should keep pushing gun control.

I double-dog dare them...

There's a solution for this: Buy lots and lots of recycling bins.

(I'd offer "Hold a really big bonfire" as a solution, but I don't want to see Algore blow a gasket. The stench would be awful.)

Trying to track “tens of thousands” of gun deaths per year?

WTF??!!

Is there anybody out there, other than those on FR, who will look at and question these leftist media lies?
