DFL congressman Jim Oberstar, accustomed to winning with 65% or more of the vote in Minnesota's 8th Congressional District, finds himself running even with Republican challenger Chip Cravaack, heading into the final weekend of the campaign, a new SurveyUSA poll conducted for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis shows. Today, it's 47% Oberstar, 46% Cravaack, a result within the survey's theoretical margin of sampling error.

“Oberstar was first elected to the US House in 1974, when he was endorsed by his retiring DFL predecessor. The seat has been held by the DFL since 1947.”

MN 8 is the Arrowhead region of Minnesota: think Taconite and lumber.

Economically depressed, not too many youths (they escape to Minneapolis).

On this basis, I think Oberstar will fall...just outside the range of stolen elections.

Cheers!

My husband has a friend who lives in that district and has been working for Cravaack’s campaign. I understand their was a “no handshake” situation in their latest debate.

I grew up there. Beautiful country. What caused me to leave was the union mentality from the mining industry corrodes society - anybody trying to achieve more or particularly smart is shunned.

Actually, MN-8 extends toward the Twin Cities quite a ways in addition to encompassing Duluth and much of the Iron Range. The southern half of the district is much more conservative and the northern half is filled with people who, in any other normal world, would vote Republican -- hunters and fiscally conservative people who have had Democrat marching orders for years because they are also highly unionized.

Correct. Cravaack received a huge ovation when the candidates emerged for the debate in Duluth. Chip extended his hand to Oberstar, who refused to shake it. A highly contentious debate followed.

Oberstar is hurting and he knows it.

It would be a great day in MN if Jimmy Bikeshorts lost.

Cravaack is winning the yard sign vote 100 to 1 in the western part of the district. The contest has totally blindsided Jimmy in the last few weeks. From the Range to Highway 61, the times, they are a-changing....;.
