A majority of active-duty and reserve service members surveyed by the Defense Department would not object to serving and living alongside openly gay troops, according to multiple people familiar with the findings.
The survey's results are expected to be included in a Pentagon report, due to President Obama on Dec. 1, regarding how the military would end enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" law that bans openly gay men and lesbians from serving in uniform.
Some troops surveyed - but not a majority - objected strongly to the idea of serving with gays and said they would quit the military if the policy changed, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly share details of the survey.
Defense Department officials did not respond to requests for comment.
NBC News first reported Thursday evening on the survey's findings.
In July, the Pentagon sent a survey with dozens of questions to 400,000 active-duty and reserve troops. It asked whether they had ever shared a room or the showers with gay peers, and how they might act if a gay service member lived with a same-sex partner on base.
Military officials did not say how many troops completed the survey, but at least 103,000 had done so just days before it was due, according to the Pentagon. A similar survey was later sent to military spouses.

If the bag o skin next to me can shoot straight and has a good head on their shoulders, I really don’t care much about the rest.
That’s in the combat situation (a low percentage of most military service careers}. How ‘bout in the office, lunch room, hangar, etc. when you hear two of “them” talking about how they’d like to bed the same sex Sarge, CPO, etc. or when one of them makes suggestive comments to you. If that doesn’t repulse you, then you have been truly “diversified”.
If your son has never served in the military then his opinion means nothing.
The people who nonchalantly say who cares, post on FR all time. Post after post on a subject they don't really care about. They are either hypocrites or agendas driven, lying about not really caring "one way or the other". Give me a break.
As homosexuality is forced on the children as normal by homosexual activists who hate themselves and desperately seek approval, is this unusual?
Just looking at the thread so maybe you found a source, massmike knows for sure.
(And massmike, my computer is now fixed after a few months of mayhem, now I can store info and have it handy!)
Fewer than 2% of the population is homosexual. Every study done confirms this. Plus no one ever counts the former homosexuals, there are thousands.
You need to chill out, my friend. I am on the side of the military on this. Perhaps you should carefully read all posts before responding and dial it down a notch.
What happened?
This will show you how bogus the “survey” was. This is in the opening paragraph of the letter telling me I was picked to take the survey:
“We request your participation in the 2010 Department of Defense (DoD) Comprehensive Review Survey of the Uniformed Force. This survey will help leadership assess the impacts, if any, a change in the law commonly known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” might have on military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention. It will also help DoD develop an action plan to support effective implementation if repeal occurs.”
Now does this REALLY sound like they care what I, or others think, they are already in a “ready to implement” mode. IF they care, it is only to get rid of us with moral objections as being unsuitable to military life.
Imagine that....persons with traditional Judeo-Christian morality will be unsuitable to military service.
It certainly doesn’t sound as if your honest opinion was wanted. It sounds like a “survey” was taken to make service members THINK TPTB cared what their opinion is.
I’m old enough to be your son’s mother, and I myself used to have that same opinion: “I don’t care.” That’s why I’m not surprised at all by this younger generation holding an opinion I myself once held at their age. Especially after all the indoctrination they’ve undergone.
Hopefully, they will come to their senses in the near future. In the meantime, take heart: According to others on this thread, the survey results are skewed, anyway; the questions were asked in such a way to produce these results.
It’s HIS generation that supplies the military with soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. It’s HIS generation that is forcing these discussions to take place. It’s HIS generation that is going to have to deal with these decisions that are made by our politicians.
As a tax paying and productive member of society, I think his opinion is equal to any citizen in the U.S. Frankly, I’m surprised to hear any conservative say differently.
There is too much at stake and your civilian opinion means nothing, you and your son are dealing with something that you have no clue. Please, in this area, you'd do us all a favor by butting out.
Tell you liberal son that this issue, and his stance on it, makes him a flaming lib-tard of the n-th degree. I hope after this abomination occurs,(hopefully not) and we have to have a draft again, because hetero men are not going to volunteer anymore, that your son is the first one drafted.
Boy wasn't raised right.
Knowing nothing about my 20 years of honorable military service to our country, and his 18 years as a dependent child of a military member, I guess you could say that I have no clue. But guess what? I do, and so does he.
Well you know what? Since you should probably know better then, I have a hunch your son might be playing for the other team.
You disgust me. Your "honorable" service include stabbing everyone who served and is serving honorably in the back? You're no conservative, if you can tolerate queers in the military, and that thought doesn't seem as radical an idea as anything the left does, you're a hopeless lost cause.
The fact that you feel so strongly about this means deep down you are probably sympathetic to the homo cause, maybe hiding some latent tendencies of your own. Do you like gladiator movies?
Excellent point. Truth is, the IDF is NOT what it once was.
And the girlie armies of Europe are dying quickly. They are nearly completely dependent on the non-homosexualized American military to do the heavy fighting.
Really, what is your problem? I’ve made no attack on you, I’ve not voiced an opinion one way or the other on this subject (although I certainly have one) and I only said that my son said “who cares.”
How dare you attack my service to my country.
But at least you will feel holy about yourself.
How DARE you cheer on those who are hell bent on destroying this country!
Well, you seem very open to the idea of queers in the military, right? If so, I wish you all the worst that life can offer. Too bad you didn't raise your son right, he would be revolted by the thought too. I showed my son, who is not quite 18 yet, this thread and he looked at some of the responses like yours and was disgusted by it. He said "gays in the military you've got to be kidding".
