The latest from Alaska's procedural wars:
Just hours before the final deadline, more than 100 Alaskans came out Thursday to file as write-in candidates in an effort to thwart Sen. Lisa Murkowski's bid to retain her Senate seat.
At the urging of a local talk radio host, scores of people signed up to be write-in candidates with the Alaska Division of Elections before registration closed....
Alaska Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai confirmed that at least 100 people filed as write-in candidates. Fenumiai said early Friday morning that she could not give a specific number yet of how many candidates signed up with a name similar to "Lisa Murkowski" because she had not seen all of their names yet.
Dan Fagan, who hosts a popular conservative radio talk show in Anchorage, said that after one listener called in to say he was registering as a write-in candidate, he encouraged others to do the same.
UPDATE: The current list of candidates is here and there are three other Lisas listed, including a Lisa M.
Cool! Serves the witch right to have this thrown back in her face. lol
Princess got permission to hand out flyers AT the polls so the voters would know to write in her name.
These are identical to campaign candidate promotional literature, and the other non write in candidates may NOT hand out anything at all.
However any other write in candidate may also hand out flyers and doing so confuses the write in vote, so ANY sort of write in scribble CANNOT be counted as a Princess Lisa vote.
I was kind of hoping someone named Lisa Marcubski or Morecowski or something would show up, so they couldn’t pull the misspelling trick and say that anything remotely resembling Murkowski counted as a vote for her.
In any case, the presence of more write-in candidates should make it more doubful that they can certify any kind of scrawl or scribble as a vote for Princess Lisa.
They could declare that pointed objects represent a danger at the polls and BAN all pens and pencils...that would do it.
“But now she will not be able to say any write-in name that starts with an M is a vote for the heiress to the senate.”
Well, that may be true. But I’m willing to bet that the other ‘candidates’ don’t plan on voting for themselves. But I could be wrong.
Is it a requirement to vote for yourself if you’re running?
I love this strategy.
Screw Murkowski (and I do mean that figuratively.)
And, continuing the pro-Murkowski-pro-democrat/pro-liberal/(pro-abortion) bias in the AK elections departments, the Sec State decided (arbitrarily!) that “Murkowski” did NOT have to be spelled right. “Anything close” (which is what???) will counted as a vote “for” Murkowski!
I’m voting for Liza Markuskoy!
If you're not on the ballot, you're not on the ballot. Period. You should not be allowed to appear on an 11th hour proxy ballot cooked up by one of the candidates. The Alaskan Republican establishment, the very one that Palin took on, as as corrupt as anything I've seen coming out of Chicago. In fact, the Chicago boys could take a few lessons from this episode.
You know, the letter N looks a lot like M so those should count too /sarc
“the Sec State decided (arbitrarily!) that Murkowski did NOT have to be spelled right. Anything close (which is what???) will counted as a vote for Murkowski!”
Which will lead to a court challenge since the SEC doesn’t have the authority to change election law ‘on the spot’, per se.
Yep, and the hearing is to start this morning at 10:30 local time there. Just after 8:00 am there now, so I guess the hearing is at 2:30 EDT.
OH, PLEASE!!! this has been gone over here ad infinitum. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO SPELL HER NAME 100% CORRECTLY.
I say that conservatives ought to take out a new party name in all 50 states, including DC, P.R., and Guam, and call it... "Liberal Party", or better yet, "Democrat America Party, Inc.", file it, and get a 'volunteer' to register as they candidate in every state-wide Congressional election in 2012. That should split up plenty of the "DONKEY" constituency to blindly pull that trigger.
We have the same rule on write-ins in WI — if the person reviewing the ballots understands the intent of the voter the vote counts, no matter how it’s spelled. Didn’t say I agreed with it, but that is the law.
HOw about The Progressive Party?
Keep in mind that the real issue here is that many Alaska Natives/Indians out in the isolated villages only have limited educations, and many are functionally illiterate.
So, Murkowski wanted to hand out these sheets with her name on them (all alone) at the polling places to give them something to go by. Now, with all of these other names listed with hers, the scheme apparently is thwarted.
Are we REALLY sure this spat between Miller and Murkowski isn’t going to allow that schmuck McAdams to win? This is going to be a very serious problem if we lose another senate seat in bright red Alaska because of some spat between Palin and the establishment.
Miller did seem to be a good candidate, but his campaign appears to have faltered and been less than inspiring. I sure hope he has gotten he act together for this closing weekend.
My understanding is Democrats are going up with an ad buy in Alaska this weekend and now believe they have an opportunity to get McAdams elected.
