Nurse caught on CCTV turning off paralysed patient's life support machine

The 37-year-old, left paralysed from the neck down following a car accident in 2002, had a bedside camera set up at his home after becoming concerned about the standard of care he was receiving. Footage recorded only a few days after it was installed shows Miss Aylward fiddling with the ventilator before a high-pitched warning tone sounds, indicating it is switched off. Mr Merrett is then left fighting for life as the nurse panics about what to do next, unable to restart the ventilator or properly operate resuscitation equipment. It was not until 21 minutes later that paramedics who rushed to the scene managed to turn the life support machine back on. But by that time, Mr Merrett had suffered serious brain damage, which has left him with the mental capacity of a young child. Before the incident, he was able to talk, use a wheelchair and operate a computer using voice-activated technology. His family claims that the brain damage has severely diminished his quality of life, and he is now mounting legal action. Miss Aylward, who was caring for Mr Merrett at his home in Devizes, Wilts, has been suspended while the incident is investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Ambition 24hours, the agency which supplied her, said it could not comment as an internal investigation was ongoing. The NHS Wiltshire Primary Care Trust, which was responsible for providing care for Mr Merrett, said it was unable to comment due to pending legal action. Karren Reynolds, Mr Merrett’s sister, told the BBC’s Inside Out programme: "His life is completely changed. He doesn't have a life now. "He has an existence but it's nowhere near what it was before. He is very brain damaged compared to what he was before.

This is the level of care that Governments provide. This WILL happen here if Obamacare isn't stopped.

The headline doesn’t exactly match the information
in the article.

The sad part is she apparently didn’t even mean to do it.

New EU-standard safety sign for the NHS:

Don't be silly. The title seems to suggest that she was intentionally removing life support. She is obviously inept.

With Obama care she would have allowed him to die and then received a good comrade medal for saving the state the cost of care.

Wonder if the machine itself was so archaic that it was not as simple as flipping an electrical switch, that it had to be manually “primed” or sumfin.

Perhaps the excerpt cut out too much. It wasn’t intentional but she did turn it off and then couldn’t get it restarted. The man used to be able to hold intelligent conversations but now has the mental capacity of a child. My comment was about the level of care being given, not that she was trying to kill him. She didn’t have the experience to be caring for him.

Not qualified to be his carer. This WILL happen here after the advent of Obamacare. It's much cheaper to pay people who don't have the education or expertise for the job.

The saddest part of this article is the fact the man knew he was getting substandard care, was frightened enough to have the camera installed, e-mailed the NHS to complain and he STILL suffered ended up with serious brain damage due to the substandard care. Heartbreaking.

Picture an SEIU Obamacare nurse.

Makes me shudder. Problem is they are already training Gubmint “doctors” in hurry up courses.

Does anybody know why she touched the machine if she didn’t have a clue about how to use it? Was it just a coincidence that she pushed the buttons that shut his oxygen off? It’s too bad she took away the last part of his body he could use to communicate and move his wheelchair around.

I like the Telegraph, but they used a misleading headline. It makes it look like the nurse was trying to kill him. The nurse must feel horrible about what happened.

Institutional incompetence!

Neither malice nor stupidity. She simply was not qualified to be there.

But a qualified person would have cost your fellow citizens too much there comrade! For the good of the whole, the individual must suffer. He didn't really contribute to the society with his limited life anyhow on the Death Panel chart of worth vs expense./s
