NYT: Will the U.S. Lose Europe to Russia?
New York Times ^ | October 25, 2010 | JOHN VINOCUR

PARIS — The United States used to call wayward members of NATO back to the reservation with a whistle or a shout. It decided what was deviation from doctrine, and that decision was pretty much law.

When the Obama administration stamped its foot this time, no one snapped to attention.

Rather, Germany and France, meeting with Russia in Deauville, northern France, last week, signaled that they planned to make such three-cornered get-togethers on international foreign policy and security matters routine, and even extend them to inviting other “partners” — pointing, according to diplomats from two countries, to Turkey becoming a future participant.

NYT: Will the U.S. Lose Europe to Russia?

There's a better chance that they'll lose Europe to Mecca than to Moscow.

I question why the USA is providing “security” for 35+ nations of Europe in the first place.

NATO seems to be just another bureaucracy that exists and grows simply because it has been around for 60+ years, only this one can get us into wars in places like Georgia and Turkey. When the Soviet Union fell, it should have been disbanded and replaced with bilateral agreements with UK and Germany only.

the NYT, as per usual has missed the boat. The pack of fools on Capitol Hill has already lost the USA to its creditors.

Can we really worry when our TOTUS and the Dims, won’t even secure our borders? How can we be respected as a nation in anyone’s eyes?

LOL, what, we won't get to pay to rebuild Europe after the Muslim revolt there destroys it?

Let Russia and Europe have one another. They were big pals when this country first got dragged into their squabbles back in WWI (by a wonderful 'progressive') and they can be big pals again. It'll be fun to watch them all join in extended negations with the “religion of peace” like Russia has been.

Regards

Europe tried to cozy up with the bad guys in the late 30’s, too.

Hey, Europe - how’d that work out for ya back then?

Liberal elite globalist strategerist geniuses like the Clintoon/Rodhams and Maddie Albright have been arguing for a “multipolar” world for decades

Sometimes when you keep asking for something, you get it. Unfortunately. The humbling of America by American liberals to be an apologetic timid player at the table will be a whole new era of history. Other nations will gravitate to the strong, not the weak and apologetic. Already happening, China is calling the shots on our economy and beginning to affect our international relations. We just cancelled a military exercise with South Korea because the Chinese told us to.

Once Europe got on Russia’s energy tit, they became dependent on Russia despite Russia’s history of political strings being part of energy sales.

Europe will side with Russia or at least stay neutral in any conflict involving Russia rather than get its Russia supply of gas cut off.

Just like USA citizens stay with the Dem Party who give them money.

Russia is a crippled invalid wheezing in the throes of terminal disease

The NYT wants so much for America to be screwing things up so the they can sit back and smugly say “I told you so” and justify their view of America as an imperial power in decline. Any event is viewed through that lens. We aren't in a Cold War world anymore. NATO isn't reflexively anti-Russia anymore. European countries are rebuilding ties with a non-ideological Russia. Is that going to hurt us? Maybe, maybe not. We certainly have common cause with Russia on Islam, as do the other Europeans. Yet the NYT views this through the Cold War lens of America “losing Europe.”

Will the U.S. Lose Europe to Russia?

Europe is not something that the U.S. owns in the first place. Therefore, Europe is not "ours" to lose. If Europe is "lost" to Russia it will be entirely the fault of the Euroweenies. The same is true for the infiltration of Islamic radicals in Europe. Given the work ethic that exists these days in most of Europe I say Russia can have it. We saved Europe's bacon twice already in the last 100 years at great cost of American lives and treasure. We've spend trillions defending Europe for the past 60 years and they've shown themselves to be quite ungrateful, especially France and Germany. Frankly, I hope they enjoy dealing with KGB thugs.....

Let Russia and Europe have one another.

Russia and Europe are both in a demographic death spiral, shrinking in the face of their "guest" invaders. Russia's poor health will only accelerate its inevitable demise; China will annex the resource-rich eastern frontiers that Russia will not have the strength to defend, and the rest will burn out into chaos and ruin.

So yes, let Russia and Europe have one another. Islam will conquer the remnants of both corpses.
