The iconic Walkman has come to the end of its run.
Sony has pulled the plug on the original portable cassette-tape player, Japanese media report.
The company made its last shipment of the cassette Walkmans to the Japanese market earlier this year -- and when they're gone from stores, they'll be finished.
Sony is outsourcing some manufacturing to a Chinese company for sales to people who still use obsolete cassette tapes.

The Walkman still survives...as an MP3 player and radio. I remember those first Walkmans. They are now collector’s items.
It might be hard for some of the younger Freepers to believe, but in 1982, the cassette Walkman was the coolest thing on the planet. I felt like such a big shot back in those days, walking down the street with 12 songs in my pocket!

I just bought a Sony 16GB Mp3 player on sale for $50. I never thought I would need one that big.
It would be nice to have an MP 3 player with AM and FM reception too. That way you could record say Rush, play it later without the computer.
Storage space is not different than closet space... You'll fill up all you can get! I've got a 4GB Sansa Clip+ that I added a 16GB microsd card to... It's full. Lots of music, plus all 7 Harry Potter, Atlas Shrugged, and about 8 other audio books!

I can do that now with my iPod touch and the radiotime app
I have seen them with FM but not AM...yet.
Misspoke, app called Tune In Radio
I still download music to cassettes from the Internet.
bttt
Yeah, back in 1980 we got one from our Japanese exchange student. Us kids were so cool then. Awesome little device at the time, but now I can’t live without my iPhone and my Mac.
The way it was explained to me years ago was that the AM receptor is twice more massive that it will defeat the purpose of the mp3 player being so small u could fit it into your jeans pocket.
I still have my 4 GB Sandisk player I bought in 06’ and use it on occasions because I get lazy changing songs on the weekends once I tire of the songs on my Ipod.
I bought something called an iPod today - it’ll hold hundreds of songs, some movies, games, and videos... It’s charging right now... we’ll see if I can get the thing working...
I have a first generation discman from 83 that I bought in japan.
It still works.
Yes. You need a decent sized ferrite core antenna for AM reception
Years ago they had a parody of a K-Tel commercial (young freepers, you can google “K-Tel”) offering “every record ever recorded” — Lithuanian Language records, Disco Polka”, etc. “And, if you act now, a free hairbrush.”
These days you can fit every record ever recorded in your pocket, for about the price of a hairbrush.
It’s called Radiotime? I’m going to look for it.
I’ve never heard Rush’s show.
I can’t find it. Do you mean Radio Time Machine?
