Why the NRA is bent on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
Charlotte-Gun-Rights-Examiner ^ | 20 October, 2010 | Paul Valone

Others have complained about flawed NRA candidate ratings. Now let us examine why the organization purporting to defend the Second Amendment has been systematically selling out…

As conservatives battle to wrest control of Congress back from the left, liberal news organs like The Washington Post, National Public Radio and even “The Gray Lady” herself have cheered the NRA as it endorses Democrats across the country.

And rest assured the NRA’s efforts are systematic. Take, for example, an e-mail I got yesterday from “Marge”:

“Isn't it strange that the NRA has supported Shuler, but you, based only on the answers to a survey can support some one [sic] else. Perhaps you should do your ‘due diligence’ and look at the voting record of the incumbent. Or, is that too much trouble. Anyone can say anything in a survey -- voting record stands for all to see. Organizations like yours do nothing but dilute the effectiveness of the ‘real’ gun support activists. Get your act together!!!!”

This was in response to a multi-thousand-piece postcard mailing done into North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District against incumbent Democrat Heath Shuler and for opponent Jeff Miller. I explained to Marge that Shuler’s low marks weren’t based on just a survey and that he didn’t really have a voting record on a strictly gun-related bill, but had brokered House passage of HR 5175, the misnamed “DISCLOSE Act,” a piece of legislation designed to muzzle gun groups by requiring them to disclose membership information if they so much as mention a candidate prior to an election.

I also explained that Shuler cut language to exempt the NRA – and only the NRA – while leaving other gun groups to hang, after which the NRA sat on its hands and cheerfully withdrew opposition to the bill.

In the NRA's defense, they maintain that they need to be consistant and support people who vote pro-gun when they need them. Of course, having people who have learned to vote the way they need to in order to obtain the NRA endorsement, doesn't do us any good if we lose the Republic to socialists/crony fascists.

It’s a law of nature. Any organization that is not specifically conservative will, over time, become more liberal.

I’m an NRA life member.

Looks like we need a good house cleaning to rid the NRA leadership of leftists, RINOs, infiltrators, poseurs, saboteurs, agents provocateurs, and just plain stupid people.

The NRA came within inches of endorsing Harry Reid until the membership spoke out with thousands of emails. The second amendment would be useless if we kept going down the socialist road of Reid and his ilk.

NRA is just another corrupt Washington Establishment lobbying firm now.
We are tearing down the ENTIRE old corrupt establishment. ALL of them have only cared about their own gravytrain for years, while America has been bled dry of her prosperity and her liberty in order to keep them fat and powerful.

The writing is on the wall for the NRA and its clueless supporters.

The organization has been co-opted with Democrat supporters. The problem with that is that Democrat candidates often follow the party line just like the Blue Dogs on important legislation.

Democrats also have a negative role in 2nd Amendment rights when they vote for liberal Federal and Supreme Court judges like they did enmasse for Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

So the excuse of saying Democrat politicians are pro-gun is hollow and easily disproved.

I guess I’m not in the minority on this one. I’ve made my decision to move over to GOA because they have more conviction than NRA. I still can’t get over how NRA supported Dingle in Michigan when he told the NRA to stuff their membership during the Klinton years.

I wrote them a while back, after denying an endorsement for a true friend of gun owners and instead giving it to one of Pelosi’s cronies. (Ron Kind D WI) I compared it to a neighbors dog leaving a large, steaming pile in my front yard. First time in 40 yrs, not at all proud to be a Life Member.

They wrote back with lame excuses. Where can I join a group that shares my views and stands up for freedom of gun owners?
Suggestions welcome.

I’ve seen the NRA endorsements in the latest issue of the NRA magazine American Rifleman. In the vast majority of cases they endorse the Republican. Endorsement of a Democrat only occurs when the Dem has an A rating and he’s the incumbent.

The NRA is a single issue lobbyist. They are narrowly focused on protecting 2nd amendment rights. I’m sorry but you will have to go elsewhere to find comraderie on all conservative issues. It is important for the NRA to retain legitimacy irregardless of who is in political power.

Yeah you can do that or, you can do what many people out here have done, including “Life Members” and tell the NRA to FO when you quit and join the GOA.

Make sure you tell them why you are quitting and that you want a refund. The NRA will understand hits to the wallet.

Nothing says that they can’t withhold endorsing anyone in a race or making a statement that both the Rat (commie, marxist USA hating) candidate and Rep challenger have solid pro-2nd amendment stances.

My NRA renewal is coming up shortly and I’m going to sit out the coming year by not renewing. I’ll join another group instead.

You are far from being in the minority. GOA is the way to go.

NRA = NEA

Currently, the two best groups to work with are the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and the Bill of Rights Foundation. Both groups were instrumental in the Heller case while the NRA was too busy trying to shut Heller down.

SAF is the group responsible for McDonald as well. The NRA is currently trying to undo the Heller II case and has spent quite a bit of money trying to stop a case in Maryland that will stop Maryland from prohibiting gun purchases by people with misdemeanor convictions.

The NRA is NOT our friend. I’m glad that people are starting to see what the NRA really is. Sadly, if the NRA really worked with us instead of against us, they would share in many great gains including a massive increase in their membership. But they can’t see past their own corrupt noses and the all mighty dollar.

Well, here in Nevada the NRA was on the verge of endorsing Reid; Sharron Angle is a strict Constitutionalist they have refused to endorse her. Consequently the NRA can bite me.

“Make sure you tell them why you are quitting and that you want a refund. The NRA will understand hits to the wallet.”

When they call our house they get an earful, and now we’re getting fewer calls. We asked that our recent donations be refunded, but they haven’t done that. The Harry Reid incident was the last straw. Huge discernment issues if they even considered endorsing that disgusting traitor.

The AFL-CIO just released their endorsements for Pennsylvania. Does any politician care?

Why would anyone in Washington care what the NRA’s endorsements are if they were an arm of the Republican party?

I’m an NRA life member.

I've been a member for over 30 years, but they still endorsed my Dem opponent in a WV State Senate race. I immediately sent an email asking for an explanation, but to date have not received an answer.

I'll likely change my membership over to the Gun Owners of America.

According to the 2008 IRS Form 990 for the NRA1, Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre raked in $1,263,101 per year; NRA Institute for Legislative Action EVP Chris Cox made $661,059; Treasurer Wilson Phillips made $649,463; General Operations Executive Director Kayne Robinson benefitted to the tune of $602,608; and last, Secretary Edward Land, Jr. trails the pack with a measly $509,186.

Hmm. Worth remembering the next time you get that desperate appeal for money, no?

That works out to 10,5298 memberships just to pay these 5 people. Absolutely outrageous!!! The NRA = the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/pimps of the gun-control issue.
