PORTLAND, Ore.Republicans on the campaign trail are bashing the president and his agenda and some are vowing to shut down Washington if they don't get their way. Behind the scenes, key party members are talking a different game.
A number of House Republicans, including some who are likely to be in the leadership, are pushing a post-election strategy aimed at securing concrete legislation, with the goal of showing they can translate general principles into specific action.
Among the ideas is to bring a series of bills to the floor, as often as once a week, designed to cut spending in some way. Longer term, GOP leaders say they recognize they may have to compromise with Democrats in tackling broader problems.
If they recapture the House, Republicans say they are wary of following the example of the class of 1994, which shut down the government in a standoff with President Bill Clinton. Top Republicans contend that passing legislation, or at least making a good faith effort to do so, will earn them more credibility with voters than refusing to waver from purist principles. "It's pretty clear the American people expect us to use the existing gridlock to create compromise and advance their agenda," said Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.). "They want us to come together [with the administration] after we agree to disagree."
GOP leaders stressed that this depends on the willingness of President Barack Obama to compromise as well. And some say if the post-election atmosphere is especially toxic, such compromises may be difficult.
The approach stands in contrast to the Senate, where Republican nominees including Kentucky's Rand Paul and Nevada's Sharron Angle more clearly represent the anti-establishment instincts of the tea-party movement.

HELL no.
And here I thought I wouldn’t curse anymore.
You mock us at your peril, Pubbies.
“I hope these bills are not all symbolic fluff-cutting;”
I have some bad news for you...
What do you think “in some way” is supposed to mean? Particularly from the guys who are already talking about concilliation before the election is even held?
It was Clinton who shut down the government. The Republicans passed and budget and sent it to Clinton for signature. Clinton vetoed the bill and thus shut down the government. Taking the position that the Repubs must conceed to whatever Obama wants and it they don't then it will be the Pubs who responsible for Obama shutting down government is madness.
NO you republicans are NOT ging to do that! You all need to learn from Nancy and lock the door and do not listen to the left wail. If you do this then America will turn on yu just as fast as they did to the dems. Listen and Learn we do not want you to work with the dems they are the enemy.
Looks as though we still have work to do. A good start would be the RNC and the Quisling hacks infesting the national GOP office in DC. Then, if necessary, another House cleaning in 2012!!!
How unfortunate that the country needed to be driven to the very edge of the statist, collectivist, socialist abyss to get folks off their duffs. I just pray they REMAIN off their duffs as there is more to do. Actually, it should have been done decades ago.
Over the years when, to steal a line from Billy Joel, I wore a younger mans clothes I was involved with several pretty solid conservative candidates for Congress. One was a Democrat (Lawrence Patton McDonald) because that was the only way he could win in that district. Those old-timers who know Larrys record will tell you that he was a solid an anti-communist America Firster and more Republican than the Pubbies in nearby districts at the time. (His mothers cousin was General George Patton from whom he got the middle name and his incredible resolve and love of this country.)
Those other candidates ran as Republicans. Because I was a rabid Bircher back then (still am philosophically!), those candidates had to pass my rigid litmus test or I went looking for someone who did. For that reason, I hooked up with what the TRADITIONAL country club Pubbie establishment types believed were too radical for their refined tastes.
As those campaigns began to unfold and it became clear to the country clubbers that these guys 1) had a shot and 2) were pretty independent thinkers who would be hard to keep on the reservation once they got sworn in, the local Pubbies communicated that information to the Republican National HQ types who rather quickly sent in campaign professionals ostensibly to lock up the impending victory.
Instead, in nearly every case to which I was privy, these professionals proceeded to TORPEDO our guys campaign in subtle but effective ways.
From that experience I can tell you that the Pubbies at the HQ in D.C. would rather have a Democrat win a given district than have a pubbie up there who would embarrass them by refusing to follow the party line.
If YOU become involved in campaigns for solidly conservative, America and Constitution loving, hard-nosed, independent thinking candidates in 2010 and 2012 and beyond and I pray many of you do — please DO NOT trust any of those folks from GOP HQ in Washington. If they want to send you no-strings cash for your campaign, take it. If, however, they suggest sending in one of their professionals, tell them to fuggetaboutit.
They ARE WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS AND THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!!
“The common and continual mischief of the spirit of Party is
sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to
discourage and restrain it.” G. Washington
a compromise with Obama = getting NOTHING we want and EVERYTHING he wants!
It's really quite simple: you kick their asses and then make them compromise with you. Why is this so hard for Republicans? Are they so desperate to be liked by the establishment media (that will always detest them, no matter what they do)? Are their spouses ignoring them? Were they abused as children? Winning feels good, honest. You guys really ought to try it sometime before doing the usual French Army impression.
The horse is out of the barn. They can’t go back. Now, if they don’t compromise, the dems will say the republicans are liars.
Compromise with Communism is subversion. We are not electing Republicans so we can get socialism on a slower time schedule.
HELL NO TO COMMUNISM!!!!!!!!!
Tell them.

It’ll probably be the Senate RINO’s who sabotage everything for us
This is an idea which will never happen, is not meant ever to happen. It is boob bait-- sounds good, won't happen. If the GOP wants to prove their bona fides, they can start by passing a budget--which we never got this year from the 'rats btw-- and pass it at about the levels of 2007.
Then they can defund all of obamacare, and dismantle the cancerous bureaucracy the bill creates.
If they do that then they can go play their little reindeer games like they always do.
I am not surprised by this story though, I must admit. RINO's are undoubtedly democrat lite.
It sounds to me like Issa just disqualified himself from any kind of leadership position. Someone needs to ask him what part of Obama's desire to destroy the country does he want to get together with Obama on?
yep, ditto the class of '08. Both of them resulted in massive backlash. A more moderate pace likely would have resulted at least the same legislation, without everyone getting kicked out at the end of the term.
"More moderate" doesn't necessarily mean "More agreeable". It can also mean, "We're not going to force every little thing that we've ever wanted on the electorate."
But, unfortunately in this case, past history shows that it likely means "more agreeable".
“Well, this is their last chance. Either wake up and figure out whats going on, or the party will die and all these hacks will be shoveled into the dust bin of history.”
They do not realize how close they stand to oblivion.
This truly is their last chance. If they botch this, remain passive or sell out in 2011, they will be abandoned en masse, and with finality.
In 2012, it will go like this for them:

“Politics are of course the art of compromise, but after all we have gone through, they had better not start compromising on our core principals. The article is a little vague on what is specifically meant by this - it could be a trial ballon for traditional GOP surrender, or it could be simply a statement to shut up early complaints from the left. But it feels more likely to be bad than good.”

Obama announced just last week that he has no intentions whatsoever of compromising with a GOP-controlled congress and that Republicans are going to have to be the ones to JOIN HIM to get anything accomplished!
I swear, if the GOP blows this huge mandate we’re about to hand them by caving with the Dems on major legislation, then I’ll be officially FINISHED with the GOP and would be willing to vanquish them by putting all my future time, energy, and financial resources into a Constitutional-based third party. The Republican party is on thin ice right now as it is.
Make that Socialist/Communist lite.
I’ve never been able to understand the Republicans go along to get along mentality.
