Why not? There are many such people who do not care for a lavish mansion while they care for power and glory. There are also many wealthy people who live in not-so-great homes and drive ordinary cars.

Yes, I do concur there are exceptions but there is a very strong over-riding correlation between those who crave, achieve power and the amassing of materialism, money. Money,
exorbitant amounts of money, having it, is the ultimate freedom/power, and it is that which ordinarily attracts megalomaniacs not necessarily because they are materialistic,
have a predilection for a sybaritic lifestyle but simply for,as manifestation of power.
