But the state of California just calls them illegal.
Twice in the last two years, officials have revoked the liquor licenses of El Monte bars for charging patrons a surcharge to drink in the company of a woman provided by the bar.
The Alcoholic Beverage Control last week took away the liquor license of the Halcon Bar on Garvey Avenue due to allegations of providing bar girls.
Two years earlier, police and the ABC pulled the license from the Cancun Bar, which they said was charging $9.50 to drink a beer with a woman.
Since 2008, the Alcoholic Beverage Control has accused 83 bars of using women to encourage patrons to drink, including 29 accusations so far this year.
"The biggest concern we have for these cases is overconsumption, or rather the potential for overconsumption, caused by this practice," said ABC spokesman John Carr.
The women encourage customers to drink too much, Carr said.

Providing the companionship Americans won’t provide?
overconsumption is not the problem in those places.
As long as they are adults I could care less.
“Overconsumption”?
At $9.50 a beer?
Someone has a lot of gall calling that 'inexpensive.'
“In addition, male prostitutes dressed as females would often hang out in the bar after they turned tricks at other locations, Hernandez said.”
AIEEEEEE!!!!
Concur.
Although I must say that I have learned through long experience that the company of a woman is never inexpensive.

Thanks for your service!
Not sure how you mean this statement but I concur.
The American male has been portrayed as spineless dumb asses that just need to do what women say they should. I can name 3 examples:
Raymond - Everyone Loves Raymond
Chris’ Dad - Everyone Hates Chris
Doug - King of Queens
I am sure I could rattle off more if I felt like using my brain.
Uh Oh, I am going off on a tangent. Some women in their late 30’s early 40’s are out there looking for someone to date, love etc. They wonder why they can’t find Prince Charming. Well if Prince Charming is say... about their age he is probably trying to date someone younger than them.
I recently looked at a dating site and these average to above average, 30’s-40’s year old women who stand about 5’1” to 5’5” have a requirement for a guy 6’, smart, successful, handsome, and “is good with kids”.
Good luck sister, that dude is dating two or three 20 somethings that don’t have 3 kids living with them and don’t want to change everything he has going in life so they can feel like they are in control.
Again sorry for the rant but I am just saying, $9.50 for some companionship(and BEER) is cheap compared to the eventual beat down in court that some marriages end up in.
I am all for people being happy with someone they are with, and am in no way saying it isn’t possible to be happy, just saying as a white, 30 something man, my time seems to be better spent in Argentina than trying to date a woman my age in America.
Fondly reminds me of my Navy days in Tijuana, Olongapo, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Sidney, Singapore.

Was a Shipboard ‘WestPac Warrior’ 57-62, loved every minute of it.
As someone who spent 18 months in the Paris of the Orient (66-67) I sheeplishly admit that if I had the $$$ I spent on "Saigon Tea" (and if memory serves me, the drinks were only about .75-$1.00 back then) I could be retired and living comfortably in the Caribean rather than freezing by butt off here in VT. lol
AND that does not even include what I spent on the Bar Girls for the year I spent in Japan (outside Tokyo) or when I traveled throughout the Far East/SE Asia to includ the Phillipines, Okinawa, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Malaysia, etc.
OK, I was a young, dumb and full of .....well, you know the rest, Fly Boy, but ohhhhhh, the memories.
Back somewhere in the 30s or 40s, there used to be ‘dime a dance’ halls where guys went to dance with ladies.
Lets use a date of 1940 and someone give us the inflation corrected price from a ‘dime a dance.’
Maybe these bars could switch to dancing with customers.
