It was Sobrans pathological hatred of Israel that led to his and William F. Buckleys parting of the ways at National Review in the 1980s. As the NY Times obituary about him summed it up: Mr. Sobrans isolationist views on American foreign policy and Israel became increasingly extreme. He took a skeptical line on the Holocaust and said the Sept. 11 terror attacks were a result of American foreign policy in the Middle East, which he believed that a Jewish lobby directed.

Like all "right wing anti-Zionists," Sobran was a supreme hypocrite. He defined Zionism as a belief in "the right of Jews to rule non-Jews," ignoring the fact that all nationalisms teach the exact same thing with regard to their nations (Greek nationalism says Greece belongs to the Greeks, regardless of the non-Greeks who live there; Irish nationalism says Ireland belongs to the Irish regardless of any non-Irish who live there). But of course Jewish nationalism is different.
Sobran also supported the right of whites to rule Blacks in South Africa. By what twisted logic does he decry the right of Jews to rule non-Jews in Israel?
The answer lies in Sobran's henotheism. Jewish nationalism, because it is rooted in the Objective Universal G-d, is a threat to all the nations of the world and their mythologies. In some metaphysical sense, Jewish nationalism keeps the human race united and subject to the One G-d. Henotheists resent this. Without Jewish national identity and its objective source in the True G-d, the nations could turn to their idols. So in a sense "palaeos" are quite justified in their otherwise insane hatred of Jewish nationhood.
So long as the Jewish Nation exists the idols and mythologies of the nations are threatened. If Israel were to lose its identity the nations could throw off the yoke of the True G-d and worship the idols they have created in their own images.
This is the source of all the "stop Zionism and race-mixing" rhetoric one finds among "palaeos." Should Israel disappear (G-d forbid!) the human race could fracture into a "planet of peoples"--the dream of all henotheistic Jew-haters, left or right.
I know you’re not a big fan of Julia Gorin, but she really “pwns” Ann Coulter on this issue.
I don’t see the connection to Ann Coulter...
Whoever wrote this b/s is an idiot.
I’m not sure if you are aware that when Ann Coulter spoke to the HomoCon audience, she lectured them against gay marriage and told them to buck up and stop being so self-pitying since most of them are rich white guys who live to collect antique tea sets and dress up for Halloween.
I tried reading this article but had to stop because the author called her “a bitch.” I figured she was exactly an objective source, lol!
Desperation is setting in big time.
I am not going to pick on Coulter because she has a misguided respect for Sobran.
She did, however, miss a chance to remain quiet.
I stopped paying attention to her when she came out as an anti-birther - weirdly at the EXACT same time as Beck, O’Reilly, Neil Boortz who is a useles POS, Hugh Hewitt, Ingrham, Medved and a few others.
My guess is Prince Al Waleed at News Corp-Fox/Disney-ABC/TW-CNN told them if they wanted to stay on the air to not pick on the mus*im the Saudis put in the White Hut.
Not ALL nations.
Anybody can become an American, as good an American as anybody else. We have no permanent underclass of "ruled" people. Which is more than fine with me.
This is interesting. There really isn't "American Nationalism" because we don't have a strong belief that "America belongs to Americans". Not in the sort of "blood and soil".
The left, of course thinks everyone in the world who can drag themselves across the border is an American. Conservatives (most conservatives, especially NeoCons) are of the "propositional nation" persuasion. That is people who follow the rules to get here and embrace the popositions of the USA "all men are created equal", the Constitution and such are Americans.
Thus to all these people (ie: most Americans) any form of nationalism seems a bit wacky.
This doesn't excuse Sobran's anti-Israel position, it's just an insight.
I think that Ann Coulter makes a living at poking people in the eye.
If she was such an anti-semite (ie. ‘Jew-hater’), why did she write such a glowing tribute to her late friend Ron Silver? She obviously had a relationship of some sort with the man and loved him.
I am not sure what to believe about Ann Coulter, but I sure would not envy those who debate with her in public.
The writer didn’t make a case at all. If Joe Sobran was an anti-Semite, it doesn’t mean that everyone who liked him was an anti-Semite.
Since Jesus came America is the new Israel. Or so they say. So I’m not sure that Paleos need to hate Israel, they need to hate America, and Christianity. And, most do!
I have had some friends that are racist. That doesn’t make me one. I have friends that are gay; that doesn’t make me gay.
There are plenty of enemies of conservatism. No need to create new ones out of whole cloth.
Exactly where I quit reading as well. I was trying to find the thought that the writer was also searching for, but when they called Ann a bitch, I figured objectivity had been lost and whatever the thought was, it wasn’t worth any more of my time.
Need I point out to both Gorin and to Sobran's traditionalist Catholic fans that Sobran was twice-divorced?
If traditionalist Catholicism teaches anti-Semitism (which it doesn't) as well as the sinfulness of divorce (which it does) - why would Sobran's anti-Semitism be considered a facet of his alleged "Catholic traditionalism"? He didn't live as a traditional Catholic, why should it be presumed that he thought like one?
Sobran was indeed a henotheist.
And Coulter and friends seem to have an attitude toward Sobran like the attitude some people have toward friends who used to be the life of the party - until they dropped from sight and became suicidal alcoholics.
The people that who carefully avoid the moral of the story, who laugh and joke about the drunken pranks of yesteryear and ignore that those amusing times were masking the much darker reality of what was to come.
Just as Sobran's clever-sounding criticisms of the state of Israel back in the 1980s were the prelude to his vicious anti-Semitic outbursts of the 2000s.
Thanks for mentioning the late Ron Silver. I met him at the end of his life and sat with him and his daughter at the same table. I told him how much I admired him. I guess he didn’t hear it that often because his daughter almost broke into tears. We seem to lose our best people way too early...
Julia Gorin - “conservative comedian”
She was profiled in the 2005 book South Park Conservatives, and her humor was featured in “Penthouse” magazine
http://www.juliagorin.com/index.html
She draws some very odd conclusions.
Anne says, “Ive often used a Sobran observation to explain why I have a greater affinity to Israel than to the Muslim world after 9/11.”
From this she draws the strange idea that Anne only felt such an affinity after 9/11, not before. I’m reasonably confident Anne made her disagreement with Muslim terrorism and sympathy with Israel perfectly clear prior to this date, although I’ve not researched it.
If I made a similar remark, it wouldn’t mean I was a fan of Muslim terrorism or fundamentalism prior to that point, only that 9/11 was for me a dividing point that brought my pre-existing affinities much more sharply into focus. Most Americans weren’t fans of the Japanese prior to Pearl Harbor, but the Dec. 7 attack was a dividing point for them.
I know youre not a big fan of Julia Gorin, but she really pwns Ann Coulter on this issue.
...ahhh pure drivel and horse pucky. Not a single reasonable reflection of any of Ann’s views. Attack that strawman, again and again. What BS, starting with the title!
