Smelling blood after a Jerry Brown associate used the word “whore” in connection with Meg Whitman’s campaign strategy, Republican sources have provided a 15-year-old video of the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful dismissing mammograms in an old interview.
The trip to the vault comes as Brown’s camp has been on defense after The Los Angeles Times reported on a conversation between him and an associate, inadvertently left on a police union official’s voice mail, in which he discussed Whitman and the unions and suggested she’ll cut a deal over pensions. Another person is heard on the recording saying, “What about calling her a whore?”
Brown’s campaign manager apologized, but it comes as Whitman is making an aggressive play for the female vote, who some of her supporters see as turned off by the “whore” flap.
Brown, California's Democratic governor from 1975 to 1983 and the current state attorney general, is seeking to return to his old job. Whitman, former chief executive of eBay, is the GOP nominee.
The comment about mammograms came during an episode of “Firing Line” in October 1995, when Brown was a guest on the William F. Buckley Jr. show. He sat alongside feminist and commentator Susan Estrich during a discussion about government regulations that dealt with the death of the Clinton administration health reform proposal.
Estrich discussed the component of the plan that had dealt with mammograms. "Can we get off of mammograms?” Brown interjected. “I mean, first of all, if you read the Lancet Magazine in July, there's no statistical evidence that mammograms help anyone at any age. “So it's July 1995, Lancet Magazine. Okay? It's there. Now I don't want to argue that case,” he added, as Estrich started to object. “ I just want to throw it out there."
Former Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont interrupted, "But you ought to have the option — if you think they're going to help you, if you think they're going to help you, you ought to have the option of having one."
Brown replied, “Ten thousand women, three women will be saved for one year."
The abstract from the Lancet Magazine article Brown mentioned discussed a study questioning the efficacy of mammograms, mostly in the context of a push for public funding.
Mammograms have been a standard method of screening for breast cancer for about 30 years. Last year, the Obama administration released suggested new guidelines, saying women in their 40s don’t need to get mammograms routinely, and that they’re more effective after age 50. A major national debate ensued, and the discussion was tabled, although not resolved.
A Nexis search about Brown and mammograms reveals little over the past 15 years, other than a December 1995 piece in which he talked about a new radio show he was hosting and his ability to talk about a lot of different topics. In the interview, with Whole Earth Review, Brown bemoaned the culture of the quick-hit on TV and radio, and the lack of context topics get. “The show allows me to study things I normally wouldn't get into, and to put people on the air who have something to say. I've done shows, for example, with Jennifer Harbury, Bill Kunstler (now deceased), and the Michigan Militia, and shows on the lasting damage air pollution does to human health, on toxic-waste incinerators, on the ‘natural’ rate of unemployment, on the medical propaganda behind mammograms and prostate screening,” he said. “I include a wide spectrum of people and topics that go against the grain, and I like that.”
Asked for comment, Brown spokesman Sterling Clifford said, “That is indeed what (the Lancet story) says. The debate about the effectiveness of various cancer screenings has been going on for years.”
He added, ‘Fifteen years ago, as a radio host, Jerry participated in discussions about it. He never said, don't get screened for cancer, he never said the government shouldn't pay for cancer screening. And while this clip is about mammograms specifically, he also talked about prostate cancer screening at times, so trying to make this a gender issue is a bit silly. Jerry Brown opposes cancer in all cases.”
Asked if he believes in mammography, Clifford said, “He believes in people not getting cancer, has not followed developments in the effectiveness of various specific cancer screenings.”

That they can spin it to be an “associate” making the “Whitman is a whore” comment is astonishingly dishonest.

I heard it and it sure sounds like a man to me — but alas, I would not be surprised to hear that Jerry Brown was indeed married to a man. I’ve been in CA since the fifties, and way back around 1981 I worked with a woman whose husband was a just-retired LAPD detective. He and buddies enjoyed speaking of episodes from their working days on the force. My co-worker (his wife) could not keep from telling me about the Jerry Brown story.
It seems Jerry Brown, at around age 19, was picked up in downtown L.A. for trying to solicit sex from a minor male. That’s right — and it was all covered up because that’s what authorities DID in those days.
There were more stories re celebrities like Raymond Burr — caught drunk driving near Santa Barbara — police thought at first he was an old lady but whoops, it was Burr, in full drag.
As an L.A. person with some Hollywood connections I was privy to stories about big names —and from another source I heard about Jerry Brown’s ‘dates’ with pal Linda Ronstadt. I was assured by a couple of people that they were great friends, but in no way romantically involved. Jerry had a well known long term live-in “roommate” relationship with a GUY, whose name I cannot recall. That was not gossip or rumor, it was fact. Wish I could remember the guy’s name.
Is any of this true? Who knows, but the sources were very very good.

NOW should have lost any and all credibility with any woman possessing even minimal brain power back during the Clinton era, when they supported him during the Lewinsky mess.
All NOW cares about is abortion. A candidate can advocate pushing the old and ill off cliffs; NOW will still support them if said candidate supports abortion "rights."
Whether it's calling Meg Whitman a "whore" (and I heard the tape and agree that it was Brown himself) or the issue of Muslim mistreatment of women (female genital mutilation, marrying off of young girls, rape, honor killings, stoning, and so forth) then you hear NOW's stand on those things: crickets!
Whitman hightlights the problem of rich people who pursue public office. They rarely get elected. She's nothing more than a female Huffington. You remember Huffington, right?
Whitman earned her a money with hard work and long hours !
I'm not hating her for that; I'm just pointing out she's spending $125 million for the job - if she had principles she wouldn't need to spend half that much.

Our state is on the verge of electing a conservative Governor and a conservative Senator, in addition to several conservative Congressmen. How are we a blue state?

I’m not disputing some of the points you’ve made in the comments, but I think she has a much better handle on running things than Ahnold ever could because of her previous management experience. And it’s a little bit different opposing a non-Conservative for Senate than for Governor. In the Senate, all the ‘bipartisan compromise’ stuff can undermine the team and muddy the picture (especially when McCain, Grahmnesty, etc. are doing it). You don’t have that problem to the same degree with a Governor’s office in one, lone state.
And at the end of the day...the last thing Californians need is more Gov. Moonbeam Cal. Supreme Court appointments...
