Smelling blood after a Jerry Brown associate used the word whore in connection with Meg Whitmans campaign strategy, Republican sources have provided a 15-year-old video of the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful dismissing mammograms in an old interview.
The trip to the vault comes as Browns camp has been on defense after The Los Angeles Times reported on a conversation between him and an associate, inadvertently left on a police union officials voice mail, in which he discussed Whitman and the unions and suggested shell cut a deal over pensions. Another person is heard on the recording saying, What about calling her a whore?
Browns campaign manager apologized, but it comes as Whitman is making an aggressive play for the female vote, who some of her supporters see as turned off by the whore flap.
Brown, California's Democratic governor from 1975 to 1983 and the current state attorney general, is seeking to return to his old job. Whitman, former chief executive of eBay, is the GOP nominee.
The comment about mammograms came during an episode of Firing Line in October 1995, when Brown was a guest on the William F. Buckley Jr. show. He sat alongside feminist and commentator Susan Estrich during a discussion about government regulations that dealt with the death of the Clinton administration health reform proposal.
Estrich discussed the component of the plan that had dealt with mammograms. "Can we get off of mammograms? Brown interjected. I mean, first of all, if you read the Lancet Magazine in July, there's no statistical evidence that mammograms help anyone at any age. So it's July 1995, Lancet Magazine. Okay? It's there. Now I don't want to argue that case, he added, as Estrich started to object. I just want to throw it out there."
Former Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont interrupted, "But you ought to have the option if you think they're going to help you, if you think they're going to help you, you ought to have the option of having one."
Brown replied, Ten thousand women, three women will be saved for one year."
The abstract from the Lancet Magazine article Brown mentioned discussed a study questioning the efficacy of mammograms, mostly in the context of a push for public funding.
Mammograms have been a standard method of screening for breast cancer for about 30 years. Last year, the Obama administration released suggested new guidelines, saying women in their 40s dont need to get mammograms routinely, and that theyre more effective after age 50. A major national debate ensued, and the discussion was tabled, although not resolved.
A Nexis search about Brown and mammograms reveals little over the past 15 years, other than a December 1995 piece in which he talked about a new radio show he was hosting and his ability to talk about a lot of different topics. In the interview, with Whole Earth Review, Brown bemoaned the culture of the quick-hit on TV and radio, and the lack of context topics get. The show allows me to study things I normally wouldn't get into, and to put people on the air who have something to say. I've done shows, for example, with Jennifer Harbury, Bill Kunstler (now deceased), and the Michigan Militia, and shows on the lasting damage air pollution does to human health, on toxic-waste incinerators, on the natural rate of unemployment, on the medical propaganda behind mammograms and prostate screening, he said. I include a wide spectrum of people and topics that go against the grain, and I like that.
Asked for comment, Brown spokesman Sterling Clifford said, That is indeed what (the Lancet story) says. The debate about the effectiveness of various cancer screenings has been going on for years.
He added, Fifteen years ago, as a radio host, Jerry participated in discussions about it. He never said, don't get screened for cancer, he never said the government shouldn't pay for cancer screening. And while this clip is about mammograms specifically, he also talked about prostate cancer screening at times, so trying to make this a gender issue is a bit silly. Jerry Brown opposes cancer in all cases.
Asked if he believes in mammography, Clifford said, He believes in people not getting cancer, has not followed developments in the effectiveness of various specific cancer screenings.
Since he’s a major boob, he thinks he’s an expert.
LOL - Conservative Republican Scott Walker is waltzing to victory here in WI.
Stop peddling LIES ab out Whitman.
Lies that Whitman is a Romney flunky and part of the GOP Rockefeller establishment?
Please, nobody spends $125 million just to be Governor. This woman is part of the GOP elite that supported RINOLD and will be RINOLD's 3rd term.
Jerry Brown created this MESS back in 1978
And he should be allowed to finish it since CA voters are too stupid to wake up.
Moonbeam signed the Dill's ACT which created the SEIU in CALIF http://www.foxandhoundsdaily.com/blog/joel-fox/6729-pension- bomb-explodes-jerry-brown%E2%80%99s-feet
What will Whitman do to repeal it?
Sp stop peddling CRAZY Nihilism or FELL free to dismantle your STATE for the sake of stupid purity
San Andreas Fault, do your duty!
Great news! My wife had a similar experience and is a 2 time breast cancer survivor. And, my hero. Bless you and your wife.
Using your logic we should let a liberal Republican win since they're a "Republican."
All Whitman will do is delay the inevitable. The CA Legislature holds the real power and she'll have all the leadership of a caboose.
Knowing one "H" of a lot of Californians ARE NOT GOING TO REMEMBER for various reasons, but THAT EXPRESSES THE REAL JERRY BROWN THAT WAS IN OFFICE 1975-1983. HE DOES "NOT FOLLOW developments", AND "WILL TAKE THAT UNDER ADVISEMENT", then do not a damned thing about anything that isn't in the Marxist playbook, or in his own special interest. The man is a tremendous fraud.
More properly, Californians deserve the government they elect.
They deserved Brown the first time, and if they elect him again, they deserve him again.
Brown is a Marxist lifetime failure selling one more chance at equal failure for all.
Whitman is a country club elite capitalist selling a fighting chance, if you work your butt off.
There's a big difference between the two.
Whitman is a liar, a fraud, and a phony. She views the Governor’s office as a plaything to cap off a successful business career. But business executive experience is not the same as public office experience. Brown will win anyway because of vote fraud.
Wrong.
Whitman has the power of the veto which is HUGE !
She can kill the nutter Mark Leno’s agenda in its tracks !
Women’s breasts and the health care choices they make with their doctors is none of this fascist’s business.
NOW
The National Organization of Whores? Now that fits. I doubt if any of them could make a living in the oldest profession
snicker snicker
Whitman earned her a money with hard work and long hours !
Do you have a problem with that?
The Arnold in a dress bs comment is the EXACT AstroTurf
THE LEFTIES ARE PEDDLING ON THE WEB !
Feel free to promote your Blue state up as a Left wing hell hole without a fight .
“They squeezed my head in one of those machines and didn’t find anything!”
“Another person is heard on the recording saying, What about calling her a whore?”
IMHO after hearing the tapes a couple of times I say it was Jerry Brown calling her a whore. The Brown campaign is trying to say it was Brown’s wife. If so she sounds like a man.
I think it was Jerry Brown and they are just trying to cover their *sses!
Anne Gust Brown is not only Jerry Brown’s wife, but is also a senior adviser on his gubernatorial campaign, who managed his campaign for Attorney General in 2006.
Brown and Gust have been together for 20 years and married for five. Gust spent much of her career as a high powered businesswoman, most recently the chief administrative officer for clothing retailer ‘The Gap.’
No, Whitman is not playing, she plans to make lots for herself and friends by being Governor, but she will do it by allowing productive endeavors. True, not a conservative, she wants the power to pick and choose, rather that the Prop 23 level playing field for all, but productivity will grow the economy for all.
I was scrolling to see if anyone else has put that line in a comment. I read that and the first thing that came to mid was,”Wha???”
Maybe there are some politicians that don’t oppose cancer?
Politico giving cover to Brown campaign. What a bunch of political whores.
Brown’s voice is distinctive. I heard the tapes and immediately knew it was Crazy Jerry calling her a whore.
