Jerry Brown: Mammograms not effective
Politico ^ | 10/9/2010 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 10/10/2010 8:21:55 AM PDT by Qbert

Smelling blood after a Jerry Brown associate used the word “whore” in connection with Meg Whitman’s campaign strategy, Republican sources have provided a 15-year-old video of the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful dismissing mammograms in an old interview.

The trip to the vault comes as Brown’s camp has been on defense after The Los Angeles Times reported on a conversation between him and an associate, inadvertently left on a police union official’s voice mail, in which he discussed Whitman and the unions and suggested she’ll cut a deal over pensions. Another person is heard on the recording saying, “What about calling her a whore?”

Brown’s campaign manager apologized, but it comes as Whitman is making an aggressive play for the female vote, who some of her supporters see as turned off by the “whore” flap.

Brown, California's Democratic governor from 1975 to 1983 and the current state attorney general, is seeking to return to his old job. Whitman, former chief executive of eBay, is the GOP nominee.

The comment about mammograms came during an episode of “Firing Line” in October 1995, when Brown was a guest on the William F. Buckley Jr. show. He sat alongside feminist and commentator Susan Estrich during a discussion about government regulations that dealt with the death of the Clinton administration health reform proposal.

Estrich discussed the component of the plan that had dealt with mammograms. "Can we get off of mammograms?” Brown interjected. “I mean, first of all, if you read the Lancet Magazine in July, there's no statistical evidence that mammograms help anyone at any age. “So it's July 1995, Lancet Magazine. Okay? It's there. Now I don't want to argue that case,” he added, as Estrich started to object. “ I just want to throw it out there."

Former Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont interrupted, "But you ought to have the option — if you think they're going to help you, if you think they're going to help you, you ought to have the option of having one."

Brown replied, “Ten thousand women, three women will be saved for one year."

The abstract from the Lancet Magazine article Brown mentioned discussed a study questioning the efficacy of mammograms, mostly in the context of a push for public funding.

Mammograms have been a standard method of screening for breast cancer for about 30 years. Last year, the Obama administration released suggested new guidelines, saying women in their 40s don’t need to get mammograms routinely, and that they’re more effective after age 50. A major national debate ensued, and the discussion was tabled, although not resolved.

A Nexis search about Brown and mammograms reveals little over the past 15 years, other than a December 1995 piece in which he talked about a new radio show he was hosting and his ability to talk about a lot of different topics. In the interview, with Whole Earth Review, Brown bemoaned the culture of the quick-hit on TV and radio, and the lack of context topics get. “The show allows me to study things I normally wouldn't get into, and to put people on the air who have something to say. I've done shows, for example, with Jennifer Harbury, Bill Kunstler (now deceased), and the Michigan Militia, and shows on the lasting damage air pollution does to human health, on toxic-waste incinerators, on the ‘natural’ rate of unemployment, on the medical propaganda behind mammograms and prostate screening,” he said. “I include a wide spectrum of people and topics that go against the grain, and I like that.”

Asked for comment, Brown spokesman Sterling Clifford said, “That is indeed what (the Lancet story) says. The debate about the effectiveness of various cancer screenings has been going on for years.”

He added, ‘Fifteen years ago, as a radio host, Jerry participated in discussions about it. He never said, don't get screened for cancer, he never said the government shouldn't pay for cancer screening. And while this clip is about mammograms specifically, he also talked about prostate cancer screening at times, so trying to make this a gender issue is a bit silly. Jerry Brown opposes cancer in all cases.”

Asked if he believes in mammography, Clifford said, “He believes in people not getting cancer, has not followed developments in the effectiveness of various specific cancer screenings.”

Surely, NOW will take back its endorsement after this and the 'whore' comment, right?? (/s)

Californians deserve Brown. Call it shock therapy - the state needs to hit rock bottom like an alcoholic before returning back to glory, and electing Whitman ain't going to cut it.

Whitman is Arnold in a skirt. The real power lies with

I just moved from Calif. to another state and if Jerry Brown is elected I would put the state on suicide watch. They have pass shock therapy to have any impact.

If nothing else I hope this teaches Brown that Whitman will fight fire with fire.

If he is going to try to make an Incident about a deceptive illegal alien hired 15 years ago, then she can make an Incident about overheard “whore” comments and question his commitment to wommyn’s issues with 15 year old mammogram statements.

For this if nothing else, kudos to Whitman. She is fighting back and has Brown on the defensive, where he belongs.

In 2001 my company was offering free mammograms. My wife missed the traveling mammogram trailer when it was at company HQ, but I insisted that she drive over to the plant to get checked.

They found a 3mm tumor.

After surgery and radiation therapy she was given a clean bill of health. Subsequent mammograms have been clear.

Nine years cancer free! thank you, Lord and thank you mammograms.

Yes, and for his part in the fight against cancer the good doctor believes in people not getting cancer but doesn't keep up with the efficacy of current treatment modalities. Uh huh.

No word yet whether, as Attorney General, Brown's plan to fight violent crime is simply a belief in people not committing violent crimes while disregarding crime rates, but at least that would show consistency between his legal and medical acumen...what a dope. He should run for mayor of Oakland....again.

Don't forget: If it's yellow, let it mellow; if it's Brown, flush it down. And enjoy your stay here in the CaliCommune.

Good point. Brown’s election guarantees CA’s utter collapse during his term, with a Repub House refusing to give it another $1T bailout. What a show that will be! (popcorn sales up 350%).

Moonbeam has been a total disaster in CA. It was his administration from 75-83 that put the state on downhill slide, after Reagan.

Reagan left office and his fiscal policies gave CA a huge 2+ billion dollar surplus in 1975. The obvious would be for the state to reduce taxes and improve the business climate at a time when it was very healthy....But no, Brown chose to spend the surplus and more on frivolous and dangerous programs that precipitated the downward slide.

Now, he wants to come back and administer the coup de gras? I only wish that it were Carly, a breast cancer survivor running against hem, and Meg working Babs Boxer over.....Right people, wrong spots on the ballot!

Jerry Brown announces NOW endorsement one day after Meg Whitman slur October 8, 2010 | 2:05 pm

Jerry Brown announced he has received the endorsement of the National Organization for Women, less than 24 hours after the emergence of a recorded message in which Brown can be heard in a conversation with advisors in which someone calls Whitman a "whore." Coincidence? You be the judge.

Using the same logic we should let Obama have a second term. The facts that it might not be possible to undo the damage is only a concern of yours kids and grandkids.

NOW is so leftist, that they would still fully back Jerry Brown if video came out of him beating Linda Ronstadt, because she laughed at (according to her, really), his diminutive manhood.

Heck, NOW would endorse him if he turned out to be the real Hillside Strangler.
