Nonfarm payroll employment falls 95,000 (Unemployment rate unchanged at 9.6%)
Bureau of Labor Statistics ^

Posted on 10/08/2010 5:44:19 AM PDT by quesney

Nonfarm payroll employment edged down (-95,000) in September, and the unem- ployment rate was unchanged at 9.6 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Sta- tistics reported today. Government employment declined (-159,000), reflec- ting both a drop in the number of temporary jobs for Census 2010 and job losses in local government. Private-sector payroll employment continued to trend up modestly (+64,000).

Household Survey Data

The number of unemployed persons, at 14.8 million, was essentially un- changed in September, and the unemployment rate held at 9.6 percent. (See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate for adult men (9.8 percent), adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (26.0 percent), whites (8.7 percent), blacks (16.1 percent), and Hispanics (12.4 percent) showed little or no change in September. The jobless rate for Asians was 6.4 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over), at 6.1 million, was little changed over the month but was down by 640,000 since a series high of 6.8 million in May. In September, 41.7 percent of unemployed persons had been jobless for 27 weeks or more. (See table A-12.)

In September, both the civilian labor force participation rate, at 64.7 percent, and the employment-population ratio, at 58.5 percent, were un- changed. (See table A-1.)

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose by 612,000 over the month to 9.5 million. Over the past 2 months, the number of such workers has increased by 943,000. These individuals were working part time be- cause their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job. (See table A-8.)

“Seasonal adjustment” means it is campaign season, with an election in 30 days. Economists were surprised because they expected the seasonal adjustment to result in a unemployment rate of 3.1%, but everyone who tried to apply the fudge factors either died laughing or collapsed in shock.

It explains how we can keep the same unemployment rate while losing lots of jobs.

More people work during the summer (farms, teens at fast food, construction - not much here) and around Christmas (retail) so the BLS compares this September vs. previous Septembers. The loss of government jobs has to be K-12 teachers, mostly not getting hired and early retirement.

Teachers rarely quit, as a K-12 teacher in suburban Columbus, OH starts at about $40K and moves up to more than $75K. It’s expensive for a teacher to move, as they lose seniority, so many/most teachers are at one district their entire careers.

Since teacher salaries rarely move down (only in extreme local conditions) and real estate taxes are designed to collect an amount (meaning if all houses drop in appraised value by 50%, the taxes remain the same), a district only loses money from the state, or when properties go vacant, so that no one is paying real estate taxes. Figure 3.2 million government K-12 teachers, my best guess is that 50K positions went unfilled due to lack of money to pay, so that average government K-12 class size went from 15.7 to 15.9.

I wish the GOP would start reminding people that Biden publicly promised 500,000 jobs a month for several consecutive months at the start of “Recovery Summer.”

What!? Expect the GOP to show some backbone and courage?

This much fudge being applied has got to be causing worldwide chocolate shortages....

Brett Baire just reported on Fox that 1 in 5 workers don’t have a job.

If a worker isn't working, is he still called a worker? I am so confused.

Obsessing over RINOS , at a time when the socialists(the democrats) are completely destroying America, shows the extent to which the liberal mainstream media has many of you as their little puppets.

Even the small percentage of RINOS in the GOP were made to vote the right way these past 2 years. All Republican Senators voted against the democrats’ Healthcare and other socialist bills.

For all of their 12 years, the Republican Congress stopped Amnesty for illegals and government healthcare. And this was in opposition to Presidents and democrats in Congress that wanted Amnesty and government healthcare. And they did this with just a simple majority.

Now all Republican Senators are voting against these socialist bills. STill not good enough you democrats?

Gallup had Unemployment at 10.1% and said the Bureau of Labor Statistics figure would not reflect accelerated job losses in the month of September.

Gallup Finds U.S. Unemployment at 10.1% in September

"..PRINCETON, NJ -- Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 10.1% in September -- up sharply from 9.3% in August and 8.9% in July. Much of this increase came during the second half of the month -- the unemployment rate was 9.4% in mid-September -- and therefore is unlikely to be picked up in the government's unemployment report on Friday...."

I call your attention to the table below from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not currently looking for work. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule. Updated population controls are introduced annually with the release of January data.

U6 is up to 17.1% This number is closer to the real number and it is worse, though understated because some have been out of work so long they are no longer counted IN ANY WAY by the BLS.

We are in deep trouble and the situation is getting worse.

” All Republican Senators voted against the democrats’ Healthcare “

Misleading - enough ‘Republican’ Senators crossed the line to vote FOR cloture, which killed the filibuster, which was the only way they could have stopped these bills — the “No” vote on the actual bill (where the Democrats couldn’t lose) was just a political figleaf....

The Dems are just buck-o'-rocks stupid. They will die on their ideology at the cost of doing what's good and right for America.

Merely promoting the prospect of extending the tax cuts, as is, for several more years, instead of this equivocation that Demosocialists are practicing, would immediately work wonders for our economy and the employment numbers. Being in this limbo of the unknown has employers scrambling to shore up their cash reserves instead of expanding and investing (in new personnel.)

All Republican Senators voted no on cloture , their only chance to kill the democrats’ (socialists) government heathcare.

ditto for many other socialist bills.

ditto for the Dream Act, the democrats’ Amnesty for illegals.

Your socialist propaganda doesn't work. Don't you get it yet, that government doesn't work, socialism doesn't work.

Your democrats/marxists are surely destroying the economy.

And they started the destruction with fannie mae too.

Since we were supposed to be creating 500K jobs a month, how many are we down for Recovery Summer?

June through September, my count shows -405,000. Some recovery, eh?

A worker is someone who would work if there were any jobs out there.

That is just a fact that 1 in 5 workers are out of work.

The liberal mainstream media won’t report this. Instead they manipulate statistics on erroneous government reports.

Democrats/socialists are surely destroying the economy.

What product does government produce for all those trillions of dollars per year?

according to Gallup the real number for the prior month is 10.1%.

Here's a thought, if Gallop works with the regime (judging by Gallop's polls, which are way off from Rasmussen's,) they set the bar too negative to look terrific when the regime's manipulating "beats handily.

The appearance would be “it wasn't bad.” Actually, it's good!!

Watch for the one-month delayed "revision" in November, after the election, of course.

I can understand your anger; But direct toward those who have betrayed you.

Remember name calling is the refuge of those to lack facts and logic to back them up.

Just look at the Republican candidate in the last presidential election. McCain is a NWO globalist who was also in Soros's pocket via his Reform Institute. Had McCain been elected, very little would be different - just window dressing. McCain is for amnesty and open borders (except just before elections), for LOST, for cap and trade, endorsed Obama Care (with just a few tweaks), abandoned Mia and POW's, pushed McCain Feingold, made no real effort to win the election, is for bailouts, has stated that Obama is doing a good job, and would bent himself into a pretzel 'reaching across the aisle'.

While the republican congress did not pass amnesty under Bush, it took the public melting the phone lines, fax machines, and eMail to achieve this. While they were a majority the republicans did nothing substantive to secure our borders or get those who handle immigration the tools they need to handle immigration in a timely accurate manner.

They allowed big government to get bigger; passed Med D, no child left behind & McCain Feingold. The republican majority did nothing to rein in Fannie Mae or the CRA; did nothing to remove freebies from illegal aliens; abandoned Ramos and Compean; allowed the myth of Islam being a peaceful religion to be propagated; allowed the national debt to grow significantly; allowed the erosion of our national borders and immigration policy by not voting down one 'free trade' agreement after another.

“July’s nonfarm payrolls figure was revised to a loss of 66,000 jobs, from an initial estimate of 54,000, while August’s headline figure was revised down to a loss of 57,000 jobs, from 54,000.”

And not to be outdone - all of 2009 saw something like a 900,000 job loss revision. This admin is PURE POPPYCOCK and LIES, and anyone that believes them should have their heads examined.

Not a single GOP senator voted for any of the three cloture motions on Obamacare.

Not Snowe, Collins, Voinovich — no GOP senator voted for cloture. Period.

You say exactly the same things liberals and the liberal mainstream media say.

Democrats created almost all government agencies. Bush nor Reagan nor Republicans created what is causing the most government spending.democrats created social security ,medicare, medicaid, welfare, HUD etc.

The truth is what the media called government growth during Bush was inflation, mandatory democrat laws mandating spending like social security, WARS. None of that is Republican caused government growth.

There is not one elected democrat politician that is for anything good like deporting illegals or abolishing a government agency.

All democrats are socialists .Democrats are destroying the economy, destroying America and you want to ignore that and blame those who could stop democrats. Y

So if as you say most Republicans are bad ,for Amnesty, and not conservative then who stopped Amnesty and turning 1/6 of the economy over to the government for 12 years, the Easter bunny?

For all their 12 years, When Republicans had a simple Majority in Congress, REPUBLICANS stopped Amnesty for illegals , government healthcare and other socialist bills.

That is very good CONSIDERING they were doing it against Presidents who wanted Amnesty and government healhtcare , and democrats in Congress who wanted Amnesty and government healthcare.

I know that some that call themselves Republicans are bad, socialists, and liberals etc. but not most as you say. it's a small percentage, not the majority.

Say what you will about Republicans but the last 2 years the Republicans in the Senate have all voted 100% voted against government healthcare and many other major socialist bills from the democrats.

you , and many others, are not living in reality if you think that 100% of the members of a party will agree with you 100’% of the time especially in this reality created by the liberal mainstream media.

you are a democrat. your propaganda doesn't mean a thing. People know who to kick out on 11/02 and we will. don't cry too hard, democrat.
