A test of loyalty? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided Wednesday to ask his ministers to debate and approve an amendment to the Citizenship Act, mandating that all aspiring citizens would be required to pledge their allegiance not only to Israel, but to a "Jewish, democratic" Israel.
Netanyahu is in fact endorsing a similar amendment proposed by Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
"Israel is the Jewish people's homeland," the prime minister explained. "It is so in its essence, in its government, its symbols, holidays and language, and that should be reflected by its Citizenship Act.
"Israel is a democratic country that afford full civil equality to all its citizens. This principle has always guided government policies, both domestic and foreign, and is a cornerstone of Israeli legislation.
"This principle is expressed in the term 'Jewish and democratic' and will be included in the pledge of allegiance taken by those wishing to become citizens."
The Prime Minister's Office said the matter should have no bearing on the peace talks with the Palestinians, since Israel's first prerequisite in the negotiations is for recognition as the Jewish state.
More harm than good?
Minister of Minority Affairs Avishay Braverman slammed the proposal: "This is an infuriating, irresponsible decision which will only fuel the fires of delegitimization against Israel worldwide."This decision will bear no benefits for Israel. All it does is sent a negative message to Arab citizens," he said.

“I support this loyalty oath even tho I live in American and am Christian. Israel belongs to the Jews.”
Absolutely right.
I love it.
The left will have a cow.
I don’t support Israel being a democracy tho. Democracy is when 51% ribs everything from the 49%. Since the Arabs have way higher birthrates they will soon be 51% of Israel’s population. Not to mention all the Israeli nationals now living in California and Oregon. Israel needs to be a JEWISH NOT DEMOCRATIC state in order to survive.
They are a Democratic Republic, like we used to be (well, technically we sort of still are, but no one cares to admit it anymore...I blame Star Wars, in large part).
Israelis IMO need to read John Locke and Adam Smith and incorporate those ideas of individualist freedom with the Torah and Talmud if they haven’t done so already. Look at it this way: Israel’s moderates are like Obama here. They have socialist health care and a nearly socialist economy. Most Israelis don’t even believe in God anymore. That’s why the Arabs are destroying them not just form Gaza but also from inside the same way jihadis are slowly destroying America.
You are right. Democracies have always failed throughout history. The Founders knew this and that is why we are a Republic. Heck, even Polybius knew that thousands of years ago.
Minister of treasonous trash and arabs...
According to a reliable study from a while back, at minimum 63% of Israelis believe in God. Between 10 and 20% said they did not. The rest were not certain.
Here’s the study data: http://www.jcpa.org/dje/articles2/howrelisr.htm
Note that people’s actions and identity as Jews by all of the study criteria shows how very strong is Israelis participation in key Jewish rituals and tradition. The Judaism is a religion and a culture. One’s identity to the Jewish people derives from one or the other or both - a religious, a culture, a people, regardless of race. Israel is far and away the most multiracial country in the Middle East. Israeli Jews are of every race.

“Since the Arabs have way higher birthrates they will soon be 51% of Israels population”
I don’t think that is true anymore.
Look at the birthrates. Arabs have 5 kids per family on average. Israelis have something like 1.5-2 kids per family. And how many Jews are leaving Israel to live in America or France? Israel needs to do something soon or else it will become Arab again.
Yes but are they OBSERVANT? I can call myself a Christian all I want but if I’m not going to church or praying then am I still one?
It is really none of your concern. Hashem will take care of it.
http://www.jcpa.org/dje/articles2/howrelisr.htm
The statistical results at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs study is broken down by practice and by belief. “Observant” can mean different things to different people, i.e, practicing rituals, behaving in a God-fearing manner, believing in God, doing any combination of the former, being observant at some stages of one’s life, etc.
