Since 1950, Americans with household help have been required to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes for workers earning more than $50 in a calendar quarter (plus unemployment insurance for workers earning $1,000). For many years, compliance was difficult and time consuming and, for the IRS, enforcement was a low priority. In 1986, new immigration laws made it illegal to hire undocumented immigrants, even in private homes. Both laws were widely disregarded.
So obscure was the tax regulation and so common the hiring violation that neither the Clinton transition team nor the Senate Judiciary Committee that would confirm her (and where I was a staff member at the time) had asked in the vetting process whether the nominee had complied with either requirement. The result was the first political defeat of Clinton's day-old administration and a blow for working mothers and their children's caregivers all over America.
Public awareness of and compliance with these legal requirements increased dramatically in 1993 when yet to be inaugurated President Clinton nominated a woman named Zoe Baird to be attorney general (she would have been the first woman to ever hold the office). Like many working women, the nominee had a foreign-born babysitter. Her nanny's husband drove her children to school, sports and other activities. Unfortunately, Baird paid the couple off the books and ignored their undocumented immigration status.

She was not a maid. She was/is an illegal criminal.
....the ‘maid’ is now a ‘made’ woman, and no doubt VERY WELL PAID.
Legally Whitman could not terminate because of this information. She could inform her she could no longer compensate her.
Doing otherwise would open her to EEOC action with daily penalties.
I think most of us have figured out that this illegal had help from the left. She will be crying real tears when this blows over and she suddenly discovers that her new found friends will drop her because she is of new use to them..another useful idiot...

The maid didn’t ambush Meg. She was just along for the ride and I suspect she ain’t gonna be happy with the end of the road.
She asked her employers for "help" legalizing her status several months after Whitman began exploring her interest in the top state job. Meg Whitman and her husband by all indications behaved legally but were nevertheless misled. As most people would, they trusted the person who they paid to clean their toilet. It was blackmail from the beginning -- "Fix this for me, or I will sink your political campaign". She was probably hoping for a large payout on condition she return to Mexico until after the election. When the housekeeper confessed she'd been lying, Whitman "immediately terminated Nicky's employment." Saying "it was one of the hardest things I've ever done," Whitman added she "considered Nicky a friend and a part of our extended family."
OOPS sorry for the triple posting....impatient fingers.......
Who is paying Allred to ‘represent’ the illegal criminal?
I’m still amazed the (got it) ‘made’ kept the SS letter addressed to the Whitmans which she was instructed to handle and didn’t. She claims she saw subsequent letters thrown in the trash. Was she the one who threw them. Amazing that she kept the letter for SEVEN YEARS.
Interesting comments at the site. Seem to be about 2:1 in favor of Meg Whitman.
I am remembering someone named Rosa_________??? who was similarly used and similarly dumped, but my memory is vague, no other details.
The maid decided to swim the sharks and deserves to get bitten.
Not much doubt this is pure politics, but I'd really like to know who in the Brown campaign got this smear up and running.
Are you kidding? At the very least she’ll have a job at Acorn.
This will be handled like Obama’s aunt.
I like the author's punchline: Perhaps she misunderstood the promise of America for so many immigrants and believed she had come to the land of opportunism?
I think this whole thing stinks. It’s clearly an election year bombshell sponsored by a good Democrat, Allred, to hurt the Republican.
The irony is that the liberals don’t see anything wrong with illegals being in this country and working here. The liberals are the ones who have passed sanctuary city ordinances in many cities. The liberals are the ones who go to court to derail laws such as Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and their ordinance to prevent illegals from renting houses and apartmentst.
So while I realize that the liberals will use anything and anybody to affect the election, the underlying act here, i.e. employing an illegal, is something that the liberals think is ok. It’s something that they would NOT bash a good Democrat for if a good Democrat had an illegal working for them.
The name Bob Mulholland comes to mind. I can’t prove it, but he was the one who orchestrated a last-minute smear on Bruce Herschensohn vs. Boxer in her first Senate run. Bruce was slightly ahead in polls, but due to the smear, Babs won. Mulholland is a well-known Democrat operative.
