Brouhaha Brewing Over “I Heart Boobies” Bracelets

SPOKANE -- A brouhaha is brewing over “I Heart Boobies” bracelets at Riverside High School after the principal suspended 9 students who wore them to school and refused to take them off.

The bracelets are sold by a non-profit and are designed to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. Unfortunately at Riverside High School they raised a little too much awareness for school administrators.

"I think its ridiculous that they would suspend us for wearing something for a good cause that says boobies," Riverside student Dakota Jewell said.

My question to all of this is WHY promote BREAST CANCER awareness to SCHOOL CHILDREN?

And WHY are mainly GUYS wearing the bracelets (well, I know why, but..)?

I agree with the principal. I don't think it is appropriate either. It is supposedly a way to raise money for breast cancer, but it is little more than a marketing gimmick like so many of the other products that are hawked during the month of October. Any other month of the year a teenage boy wearing one of these bracelets would be suspended for sexual harassment. The message on the bracelet is sexually suggestive. It reminds me of the young women who run around with the Playboy logo on their clothes or cars. They obviously think they will be considered “cool” by the young men they are trying to attract, but the logo shouts “bimbo”. If the students want to wear these bracelets when they are not at school, that's another matter, but it is a distraction at school.

What percentage of 16-18 year olds in this school do you think are capable of 11th and 12th grade work?

For that matter, answer the question for all students under the guidance of the US Department of Education. Why shouldn't the dropout rate be 30%? It's a great achievement that it's not 75%.

In 1941, when we had real high schools teaching real subjects, the white graduation rate was 25%. Do you think US 16 year olds are now either smarter or better educated than in 1941?

Of course not. The very idea is absurd.

Imprisoning teenagers in schools where the vast majority of them don't belong has created three important phenomenae: 1) Violence; 2) Pregnancies; and 3) A testing regime operated by lies and forgeries.

Public school should end at 8th grade, with scholarships for 14-year olds who are both capable of, and show interest in, high school work.

There’s been a similar fuss over the “Save the TaTas” campaign. Back in the day, health classes taught: “Ladies, don’t forget to do your monthly breast self-exams.” We always had friendly offers from the guys to help us do the exams. Fact is, breast cancer is a killer, and these slogans, posters, & campaigns raise awareness AND help to save lives. As for the kids... I wish we had a similarly catchy way to get them to stop texting while driving. And DUI after parties...

It's been my experience that kids who wear something like this do it more for the attention than for a passion for the cause. If kids wear a T-shirt that the principal considers inappropriate, they have to turn it inside out for the day. If girls show up in shorts that are too short or tops that are to skimpy, they have to put on clothes that are kept in the office for that purpose. It's the principal’s job to maintain order and keep the focus on learning.

What ever happened to basic propriety? As a woman, I find the suggestive breast cancer awareness t-shirts crass. To me, the whole movement lacks sincerity...they refuse to acknowledge the correlation between abortion and breast cancer. They care more about PC and selling their catchy merchandise than they do women.
