LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – It is a story that elicits an emotional response - a dog thrown from a car on the interstate. A team of specialized veterinarians is rallying around that dog, who has now been Hope.
An outpouring of support for Hope, the black and white border collie type dog who was thrown from a car on Interstate 65 near the silos in Louisville on Sept. 28. After being thrown from the car, Hope was immediately hit by another car and ended up in the center median.
"It appears that she got orthopedic injuries, a spinal injury that she might need neurosurgery, and then a variety of blunt force trauma injury to her chest and to her belly," said Dr. Scott Rizzo, a veterinarian with Louisville Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services.
The first step is to stabilize Hope and figure out how bad she is hurt. Then her veterinary team will devise a plan of action.
"It's gonna take weeks and months of rehabilitation to get her back to where she needs to be," Dr. Rizzo said.
"But she does has that hopeful energy about her," said Jackie Gulbe, assistant director at Louisville Metro Animal Services.
"She to me is a community angel," said Rebecca Eaves, Shamrock Foundation Arrow Fund, "because it is going to take the community coming forward to help to help her."
It will be costly. Gulbe says the early estimates for Hope's care are around $8,000.
"If you saw her eyes you understand why we're really stepping forward," Eaves said.
The goal is to get Hope walking again.
Animal rights activists say they hope this case brings more awareness to strengthening Kentucky's animal abuse laws.
"I think that by seeing things like this happen people will be more behind changing laws to be able to prosecute these people to the fullest extent," said Gulbe.
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the persons responsible. I must be taking drugs again. They named the dog “Hope.” What about “Change?” How is that dog doing? A bizarre, sad, prophetic commentary on our country.
We live in a country where people go hungry, they can’t read or write, and they live under a bridge, and people spend $8,000 on fixing a dog.
When pets are viewed as more important than people, our country is truly in a sad, pathetic state.
I love pets and own two cats, but they are just that - pets. They are not people.
“Hope” as a word had a noble meaning before our Pretender in Chief and his handlers co-opted and corrupted it for their own purposes.
When I was a kid we had a dog who jumped out of the back of our pickup going about 50mph. Poor guy rolled about 50 times and got up and started running after the truck. Skinned his nose up but otherwise he was unscathed.
I think the greatness of America is that we have time and money for everyone: the sick, the poor, and the helpless - which must include abused animals. Now you’re exactly right about education - but is it simply money that will cure this problem? I don’t think so...
There’s a boatload of people I wouldn’t spend a dime on. There are few dogs I wouldn’t go the extra mile for.

This individual needs to be caught, not only for the animal abuse, but also for the safety hazard he created on the road as well.
When people are living under a bridge, you know, I’ve met folks that that’s their choice. They can’t read and write? Maybe some of them needed to pay attention in school. They are poor? Lots of folks are poor - some made their own way, some not. That you have to take on a case by case basis.
But you know the dog didn’t throw himself out of the car.
How to you get from people wanting to save a dog's life to people viewing a dog's life as more important than a person?
If you are advocating the we take care of our fellow men, then I would say that the people who are concerned for this dog are far more likely to do so than the prick who threw the dog onto the highway. He's the one who most likely doesn't give a rip about your hobo under the bridge.
Why it's not your money
And I would rather give money to help abused animals then have my money spent on some welfare rabbit like octamon. If people are cant read and write and are living under a bridge.9 times out of ten its because of the choices they made in life.this poor animal did make the choice to tossed out of a moving car
There are so many stories like this in regards to dogs and cats. Missouri will have prop b on the ballot in Nov in an attempt to regulate the horrendous puppy mills in our state. Could tell you some horror stories on the treatment of dogs at some of the mills. I am voting “yes” and happy that Tony LaRussa and Sen Kit Bond’s wife support prop b too.Official Ballot Title:

create a misdemeanor crime of “puppy mill cruelty” for any violations?
It is estimated state governmental entities will incur costs of $654,768 (on-going costs of $521,356 and one-time costs of $133,412). Some local governmental entities may experience costs related to enforcement activities and savings related to reduced animal care activities.
Fair Ballot Language:
A “yes” vote will amend Missouri law to require large-scale dog breeding operations to provide each dog under their care with sufficient food, clean water, housing and space; necessary veterinary care; regular exercise and adequate rest between breeding cycles. The amendment further prohibits any breeder from having more than 50 breeding dogs for the purpose of selling their puppies as pets. The amendment also creates a misdemeanor crime of “puppy mill cruelty” for any violations.
A “no” vote will not change the current Missouri law regarding dog breeders.
If passed, this measure will have no impact on taxes.
?????????????? What has this to do with saving the life of an animal that was tossed out of a moving vehicle, hit by another car and sustained all kinds of injuries. $8k for “fixing a dog” as you call it? I would pay the whole amount if I could afford it.
No one said pets are more important than people. Where in the article does it say that???? Point it out please because I must have missed it. Also no one said pets are more important than people either. Guess I missed that part too.
What is pathetic is the fact some human being could do such a cruel and inhumane act. What is joyous, loving and kind is the community coming together to save this precious little dog.
There are food programs and there are school programs and yes, even programs that help those living under a bridge. THAT is human kindness.
I hope and pray everyone will send even the smallest amount to help this precious little dog who when healed and brought face to face with the person who inflicted this injury on this innocent animal would probably sit at the feet of the perp and forgive him because that’s they way animals are. They love and are willing to forgive for nothing more than a simple pat on the head and a kind word.

If people want to give their time and money to help this dog, I say they have every right to do it. If no animal is to be helped until every jerk in the world is made happy and comfortable first, then no animal will ever be helped.
Hey if nothing else it stimulates the economy... veterinarians have to eat, too.
Some of these folks would likely give you their shirts off their backs. Others would pour paint on your leather shoes.
And, to dig up the obvious, pets are useful to people.
