This is not good. Sistani was one of the voices of sanity in Islam, and the biggest Shi’ite counter-weight to the clerics in the Iranian regime.

The Iraqi Shi’ites were resisting the American plan for supermajority provisions in the Iraqi constitution and constitutional adoption process as an infidel “trick” until Sistani, who took the trouble of looking at the American Constitution, and saw that such provisions were a benefit we had given ourselves and want to bestow on the Iraqis, threw his support behind the plan.

Except of a period of about three months when, for reasons of internal politics among Iraqi Shi’ites, he had a raprochement with the Sadrists, Sistani has been functionally an ally of the United States and the Coalition since the beginning of Desert Storm (though you often have to think about his pronouncements to see this—they are always carefully worded to avoid siding with infidels against Muslims, but the functional import, except for that brief period, has always supported the U.S. position).
