You do understand why the French became pacifists, don’t you? It was the left, of course, but the underlying reason was that during WWI, they lost around 25% of their young men, and something like 40 million women couldn’t find husbands during the following decade. That type of demographic destruction would make most societies be a little gun shy when the opportunity came around again.

You could say the exact same thing about almost any European nation, especially Britain and Germany.

Although it hasn’t happened in a couple of centuries, French people can and will fight if provoked seriously enough. And it won’t be pretty.....................

I read earlier today they occupied the Ruhr after Germany defaulted on some WWI reparations. They were certainly ready to fight when WWII began -- there's a reason Germany went around and not through the Maginot Line.

You are quite correct but the French cultural psyche (crossroads of the world) was never like the Russian (any foreigner may be an invader). Just look at Moscow's founding.

They'll both fight, and fight hard, but the conditions to trigger the full-out fight response are very different. I wasn't around then, but I suspect the massive German forces going around the French defences were a bit too demoralizing for just long enough for the French to be defeated.

Counting the French out would be a stupid move.

And I have personally been (peripherally) engaged in a situation that made their police look silly and stupid.

Patton’s statement was bluster and well-timed for the situation. The French military took a lot of beatings in the last century but AFAIK it wasn’t a lack of bravery on their part, it was mostly the same kind of parliamentary mis-micro-management that led to our defeat and hasty retreat from Vietnam. For which you can thank the Democrats.
