Actually, if I recall correctly, he started his political career as a democrat, then saw an opportunity to get a higher office as a Republican. So he switched Parties, and became a RINO. So,,,

Specter was elected to the Senate in 1980.
He rode in on Reagan’s coattails. A better man might have been in his place in elections in ‘80 with Reagan, ‘86 with Reagan, ‘90 with Bush, ‘02 with Bush . . . plenty of opportunities to pick up that seat for a conservative in all those years. Shows the danger of letting a RINOs nose under the tent. Locks a conservative out for too, too long.
