New poll smiles on California Democrats

(Reuters) - Democrat Jerry Brown, criticized for a slow start in his campaign for California governor, has opened a narrow lead over Republican nominee and former eBay chief Meg Whitman, according to a poll released on Sunday.

The new survey by the Los Angeles Times and the University of Southern California also shows incumbent Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer -- facing the toughest re-election fight of her career -- widening her margin over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard.

Brown, a former governor who is currently the state's attorney general, holds a 49 percent to 44 percent lead over Whitman among likely voters, the poll found. And Boxer now tops Fiorina among likely voters by a 51 percent to 43 percent margin.

Whitman, the billionaire former CEO of eBay, has contributed a record-shattering $119 million of her own money to her campaign for governor. While that has allowed her to outspend Brown, it has not translated into polling success ahead of the November 2 elections in a state where Democrats account for a majority of registered voters.

Some Democrats have expressed private worries that Brown has not been campaigning hard enough, though he assured doubters that the real race would begin after Labor Day.

Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO, has taken a hard conservative tack against Boxer, who is seeking her fourth term and is a strong supporter of President Obama's agenda. High unemployment and fears about the economy have left Democrats and incumbents across the country vulnerable.

But Whitman and Fiorina both appear hampered by negative impressions among California's electorate. Fiorina's unfavorable ratings among likely voters trump her favorable numbers by 5 percentage points, while Whitman's negatives outstrip her positives by 10 points, the most recent poll found.

"It’s goal is to drive REPUBLICAN voters in CA to stay home."

More likely it will lull the Dems to stay home, if they ever intended to come out in the first place.

Lots of folks, including many on FR, have a misguided notion of what Fiorina is all about. Anyone who thinks she would have voted for the crap sandwich Boxer voted for is on drugs.

I doubt that poll is at all accurate. What I can say is that the Dems are spending a bloody fortune in my Congressional District where Mary Bono Mack is being challenged by Steve Pougnet, the gay mayor of Palm Springs. Just about every commercial break on every channel has a Pougnet ad.

As for state-wide offices, they are pouring a bunch of money into the Senate and Governor races. It ain’t over till its over, and there are a lot of ticked off voters here. So, don’t believe the polls.

While I haven't been on every thread, I haven't noticed much of trashing of Fiorina or Whitman since the primaries.

If there has been some, its been pretty insignificant.

Is there a tie-in between the "Perp Walk" for the Bell (city) Administration and AG Jerry Brown's resurgence? Does a bear sh*t in the woods? Of course the fact that he has been AG for California over the past several years and done nothing there has no consequence. The fact that he was mayor of Oakland and arguably left the city worse off than when he started is also of no consequence.

What is consequential is that he is a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT and that is of consequence to the LA Times and the SF Chronicle and the Sacramento Bee and all of the California labor and minority-rights organizations. Say good-bye to the "Golden State" and hello to the "Iron Pyrite State" (aka "Fool's Gold"). [In all honesty, the "Golden State" ended 20 odd years ago.]

You beat me to it. I remember how off the LA Times poll was in the last election for Governor. They may be just trying to boost democrat morale.

Well Maine may be a bit less liberal after November 2.

The conservative candidate for governor is ahead by over 10 points. At least in CD-2 there are a dozen or so good conservative candidates running and most have a chance of winning.

New Hampshire will be electing more Republicans and even MA is going more conservative. Soon it will be NYC and the left coast that will be liberal holdouts.

Look for an endless string of the phony polls as we get closer to election day.

The internals prove they are designed to mislead.

They got a bunch of Rinos running on the GOP side anyway. This will make it easy to blow them off when they come begging to Washington for a bailout.

You are correct. Purity is the enemy of good. These purists are exactly same as pre-teen boys who will pout and take their marbles home if things don't go their way. Most of them can not comprehend what can and can not win in blue California. For example DeVore lost badly in the primary. Not because he is wrong on issues but simply because it is the reality in California.

California was one of the first States to lose its political, social & economic sanity. It will be one of the last to regain it.

Good, then the whole mess can slide off into the sea without losing a single conservative. Or American citizen, at this rate.

This California voter isn’t staying home, and I can guaran-damn-tee you that I won’t be pulling any levers for any names that are followed by a (D).

Regardless of who the Republicans put up as candidates, they’ll get my vote for the basic fact that they’re not the Democrat in the race. If they suck, they’ll not get my vote next time, but this election has to be about wresting power from the dems first and foremost.
