New poll smiles on California Democrats

(Reuters) - Democrat Jerry Brown, criticized for a slow start in his campaign for California governor, has opened a narrow lead over Republican nominee and former eBay chief Meg Whitman, according to a poll released on Sunday.

The new survey by the Los Angeles Times and the University of Southern California also shows incumbent Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer -- facing the toughest re-election fight of her career -- widening her margin over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard.

Brown, a former governor who is currently the state's attorney general, holds a 49 percent to 44 percent lead over Whitman among likely voters, the poll found. And Boxer now tops Fiorina among likely voters by a 51 percent to 43 percent margin.

Whitman, the billionaire former CEO of eBay, has contributed a record-shattering $119 million of her own money to her campaign for governor. While that has allowed her to outspend Brown, it has not translated into polling success ahead of the November 2 elections in a state where Democrats account for a majority of registered voters.

Some Democrats have expressed private worries that Brown has not been campaigning hard enough, though he assured doubters that the real race would begin after Labor Day.

Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO, has taken a hard conservative tack against Boxer, who is seeking her fourth term and is a strong supporter of President Obama's agenda. High unemployment and fears about the economy have left Democrats and incumbents across the country vulnerable.

But Whitman and Fiorina both appear hampered by negative impressions among California's electorate. Fiorina's unfavorable ratings among likely voters trump her favorable numbers by 5 percentage points, while Whitman's negatives outstrip her positives by 10 points, the most recent poll found.

"The September 15-22 survey contacted 1,511 respondents, including 838 likely voters." Got to hand it to the liberals, they got their headline. A poll of 1,500 people, without party affiliation information in which half of those polled are not likely voters. What a worthless pol..

Truth is, it would take a genuine miracle for anybody but a fruitcake leftist to win statewide office in California.

“What a worthless pol..”

Not worthless. It’s doing EXACTLY what it was intended to do, DRIVE HEADLINES, and create the meme that Democrats aren’t sucking wind, after all.

It’s goal is to drive REPUBLICAN voters in CA to stay home.

You can blame it on the “third world element”. Standing in line at the grocery store I stand a head over everyone else if not more.

Yes, it’s racist!

The ‘RATS have got to give us some of the credit. We on the right have done a pretty good job of trashing Whitman and Fiorina.

The last liberal holdouts are concentrated along the pacific coast and the North Eastern United States. The rest of the country has finally seen Obama for the affirmative action poster boy that he is.

That sentiment is what they depend on. The truth is there’s a million registered Republicans in Los Angeles County alone, but only 1 in 8 made it out to vote last time. That’s abysmal. You get those Republicans off their asses and they Dems don’t win another statwide election.

California has gone irretrievably to the dark side. A microcosm of the future US unless we do something about in on November 2.

“The September 15-22 survey contacted 1,511 respondents, including 838 likely voters.

Here is the problem, according to their screening over 55.5% of respondent are likely voters.

Actually turnout of the last 4 midterms is 37.5%, with the highest being 40.4%.

It’s not irretrievable, it just takes hard work. The rest of the states can only turn a blind eye so long - California will take you all down with it.

Yup. Same tech used to get King Obama elected. The right never learns.

You’re missing Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and probably some other, Obama controlled disaster areas.

I commented on this poll earlier.
You conformed my suspicion.
Only half of the respondents in this poll even matter.
The other half, not necessarily even registered voters or adults, are included simply to dilute the poll and give the desired result.

It doesn’t matter though, Democrats are toast no matter how mNy phony polls they release.
