God didn't create the universe, Stephen Hawking says in his latest book, "A Grand Design."
Rather, the renowned physicist writes, "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing."
Everything created from nothing? The assertion begged a reply from the author of "Nothing Created Everything: The Scientific Impossibility of Atheistic Evolution."
"It is embarrassingly unscientific to speak of anything creating itself from nothing," said Ray Comfort, a best-selling author and acclaimed minister who's confronted and confounded some of the world's most accomplished atheists. "Common sense says that if something possessed the ability to create itself from nothing, then that something wasn't nothing; it was something a very intelligent creative power of some sort."
Hawking commits several "greater fallacies of logic," says Comfort.

I had a memorable recall about this. Years ago as a college freshman I had an elective course in Psychology. The prof was Ms. Gibson as I remember. The students were assigned to write an essay about something dealing with the world around them. My essay was simply titled “Nothing”.I remember starting out with telling that although I was writing about nothing , I was really writing about something. I used 3 to 4 pages (handwritten) telling about why in so many ways nothing is something and something can be nothing. Prof said it was all very interesting but no ‘A’ grade.
All of you people that believe in gravity are just fooling yourselves.
now if you had been in a philosophy class, A+
Of course you can create the Universe from nothing because there is nothing to stop it.
Uh, no. It's not.
*** unless I misunderstand it, ***
Yes, no offense, but you do.
The supernatural is very hard to explain. Nobody really knows what it is but many people believe it is there.
Left wing atheists tend to be extremely arrogant. They think they know enough about the universe to determine that God almost certainly doesn’t exist.
> relativity is a scam, too.
You should read “Einstein Plus Two” by [the deceased] Prof. Pietr Beckmann, written for the scientifically minded novice.
sounds like heresy!
How so? All I did was say that Hawking's view that nothing created something is no different than my view that God was, is and will be. Neither of us have any scientific proof to back it up at all. By extension, he is just as silly as I would be for claiming something to be scientific fact without showing any proof whatsoever.
The hilarious part is Christian theology states explicitly that God cannot be observed by people at all. So at least my statement of belief is backed up as being just that, a belief.
They each have their applications. They are demonstrable. They are predictive. Before Einstein, most thought of time as an absolute. It is not. Just as the Bible states. Einstein tells how energy can be equated to mass - God spoke and it was created. The theory of relativity is a miracle. Relativity explains much of the Bible and our creation.
My point was that only something outside and above nature, can view nature objectively, and VALIDLY reason about nature. Reason can only be valid in this scenario, otherwise, as C.S. Lewis puts it, reason is just the epiphenomenon which accompanies chemical or electrical events in a cortex which is itself the by-product of a blind evolutionary process.”
hunh, now, this reminds me of a theory I used to have about gravity being the proof of order -- and order, of course, isn't self-originating. But I guess that's the debate.
Nontheless, have you ever imagined what life would be like without gravity? What a mess everything would be. For example, dog crap wouldn't stay on the sidewalk. Food wouldn't stay in your stomach. Just imagine all the things gravity allows, that we take for granted!
Oh, OK. Neither is distance. It's all relative.
Or not.
Hawking may indeed be vindictive, and I certainly don’t agree with him about the existence of God, but I admire anyone who can endure what he has endured and lead not only a productive and reasonably happy life, but one that is more productive and happy than most lives. He is a remarkable man and I truly think he will come to know God eventually. I fought God tooth and nail for decades, but thankfully, in the end it was a lost cause and I was never so happy to lose a battle and the war.
I meant from our perspective. It took Einstein to point out the other possibilities. You look though a telescope to bring the distant in close but what happens when you reverse the telescope to make the close to “seem” more distant? The perspective changed . That’s all. It is the same with time.
Officially, Hawkings radiation, the escape of radiation at the event horizon around black holes.
Unofficially, his paralysis has contribute to an extraordinary attention by a press sympathetic to the disabled to his career. Yeah, I know, he is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. I bet the only other holder of that seat people can name is Newton.
Exactly my point. And I really do apprecaite your posts, because they've been thoughtful and on-point, but that is exactly the point.
"Our perspective" has been elevated just as it has by psychology and every other "ology".
The ultimate upshot is, "if it's true for you, it's true" because the fine print says, "from your perpective."
Perspective is an illusion, an allegory.
OK, thanks.
