Comedian Stephen Colbert's appearance before a House panel on farm jobs and illegal immigrants made a mockery of one of the most contentious issues of the election season. In playing host to this display, Democrats proved their self-destructive instincts are alive and well....
The type of mockery that plays on cable television doesn't translate well to the halls of Congress, especially when that body is held in such low public esteem and its gravitas is greatly in question. This was not the time for Democrats to make a farce of the process of lawmaking. For his part, Mr. Colbert was at a loss to make every response into a punch line. His ad-libbed comment about "gay Iowans" being "corn packers" amused neither homosexuals nor Iowans, and from the expression on his face it seemed Mr. Colbert knew the joke had fallen flat....
Mr. Colbert is mocking the 42 percent of Americans who self-identify as conservatives. He will continue this inexplicable form of political activism with his "March to Keep Fear Alive" rally in Washington on Oct. 30. If Mr. Colbert wants to keep conservative voters energized, he's doing a good job of it. In November, voters will have the last laugh.

I thought it was funny when they showed Sheila Jackson Lee using her phone at about the 4:32 mark. Brings back memories of her talking on the phone while constituents were testifying at her townhall meeting.
“incredibly impressive”?? Puh-leeze!
“Coates testimony before the Civil Rights Commission was eclipsed by this buffoonery.”
Don’t tell Hannity that. He did not want to talk about anything but Colbert tonight when his guest mentioned Coate’s explosive testimony. I think the Democrats planned this distraction, knowing the clueless media would pay no attention to Coates today.
I know a Rep. from Utah is on that committee. He said the thing was a farce , didn’t attend , and flew home to Utah .
This all took place today in the middle of a taxpayer-funded congressional hearing at which the public’s very serious business was supposed to be done. I’m not saying they should be, but if the people in Congress responsible for bringing this man in to testify were arrested, tried, convicted and deported to North Korea it would be OK with me.
That’s how I would read it.
As this ill-fated administration unravels, those of us who saw through it from the get-go will be vindicated. But, the victory is hollowed by the damage already done.
If people wake up at the 11th hour, I’d give them a full day’s pay under these circumstances.
The “birthers” will be redeemed as well....
I agree, never got the joke.
After seeing this on the news, I called Lofgren's office to let her know what a fiasco I thought this. I told her the same thing I tell them all regarding illegal immigrant farm workers. "We don't need illegals to do this work, we need to end welfare. It would also help solve the obesity problem in poor communities." The office worker asked if I was from San Diego. I said, "No, but I'm a taxpayer, and any thing she gets passed into law effects me."
These people need to get off this idea that the only people they should hear from is their constituents. What they do has as much, if not more, effect on the rest of the country as it does on those who live in their districts.
Quite the contrary. It served its purpose well, which was to distract from the testimony of Mr. Coates on the same day.
This was a diversion from the voter’s rights hearings.
If this is their story; it’s pretty lame.
A Donkey Rodeo.. with clowns and everything..
On the otherhand the Coats testimony uncovered corruption on a national scale.. and scope.. pure racism...
I have never ‘gotten’ Colbert. He just isn’t my idea of funny. Snarky, maybe, but funny, no. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of his career.
Maybe he is if you’re high on reefer.
“These people need to get off this idea that the only people they should hear from is their constituents.”
Well put.
I don’t often contact members of my state legislature - but when I do, I remind that that I am a taxpayer and that my taxes pay their salary and that I deserve to be heard.
I believe that I will contact Lofgren’s office on Monday and give them a polite (but firm) piece of my mind.
“What a bunch of idiots! At least the MSM is actually giving them some minor criticism.”
This is the Washington Times. The genuine MSM will applaud or remain silent.
Back in the late 70s - early 80s, as the AIDS epidemic began to take shape, and Democratic congressmen saw political capital to be made from it, they decided to hold hearings on the phenomenon (maybe it was this self-same committee, I don't really recall).
To make sure they were going to get maximum exposure from this political carnival, they asked Jack Klugman of “Quincy” fame to testify! I kid you not! If I recall correctly, he was a headliner in the hearings' drama, and yes, he did get them the requisite television exposure on the evening's news cycle.
