Yet a prosecutor says that "the jail offers Muslims meals without pork and allows them to pray together and perform ritual cleansing." So possibly this is an attempt to gain special status and special privileges for Muslim inmates in this jail.

TACOMA, Wash. -- Two Muslim inmates from the Pierce County Jail in Tacoma are suing, claiming they are banned from practicing their religion.

The lawsuit was filed this week with the help of the ACLU and Public Interest Law Group in federal court in Tacoma.

The News Tribune reports that inmates Raymond Wesley Garland and Larry Edward Tarrer say the jail prohibits Muslims from group prayer, bans certain religious clothing and refuses to accommodate their diet.

You're in jail. When in jail, you should not expect special accommodation of your demands.

A deputy prosecutor who represents the jail, Craig Adams, disputes the claims. He says the jail offers Muslims meals without pork and allows them to pray together and perform ritual cleansing.

Tarrer agreed to supply 2,000 additional pills and was arrested while meeting with his source of supply, Ronald Lee Banks. Tarrer initially refused to get out of the car, struggled with police and was subsequently arrested. A search of Tarrer’s car turned up cocaine, crack cocaine, scales, baggies and more than $8,000 in cash. A search of Tarrer’s girlfriend’s car turned up a loaded handgun, ammunition, cocaine, and an electronic scale."

Since they are so terribly eager to immerse themselves in Islam while they are supposed to be paying a debt owed the infidel, I'd suggest that we allow them to give it a try....both of them.

Indeed, although it's odd that they haven't taken muslim names.  Perhaps they took so much cocaine and exstacy that they forgot about doing that part?

Funny, i could be in a jail cell stripped nekkid and chained to wall and I could still say “Our Father”. I guess they aren’t very good muslims if they cannot route memorize the koran.....

Perhaps it's because none of those features are the important thing about who they were or what they did, where worthy imitation is at issue. And focusing on those would be the easy way out on showing "piety."

I have heard that newbies in AA are urged to find a "Higher Power" to lead them into a righteous lifestyle free of the need for alcohol and or drugs.

They're sometimes told that anything could be that higher power, even if it's a door knob, on the usually correct assumption that Christ will fill their heart if they are earnest in their prayers, and they will eventually stop praying to the dam doorknob (especially if it's in a high traffic doorway) and begin their trek to Salvation.

I briefly mused what happens to those who never let go of their doorknobs, but that 1st human candle demonstrating at the start of the Gulf War answered that question for me, and I've never had a reason to have that scene flash across my forehead until you posted the link to The Demonic Verses.

At least back then, protesting was a solo act...they might ask for a match or someone to take a picture, maybe sweep up the remains....

At a rest stop for cabbies at a local airport could be heard, “What the he** you doin’ man, I wash my hands in that sink!”

The reply was, “It is my religion.”

The individual was washing his feet in blatant disregard for the sensiblities of anyone around him.

It was surprising that the individual who took offense did not drag him out of the men’s room and advise him to learn some manners.

I turned the corner to see the ill-mannered Muslim exiting the men’s room and the expression of disbelief on the man who took offense.
