Producers of the hit children's TV show Sesame Street have canceled an appearance by pop singer Katy Perry following feedback from parents.
Perry, who rose to stardom in 2008 with the No. 1 single, "I Kissed A Girl, was set to appear on the premiere of the show's 41st season on Sept 27.
But after a segment of the show appeared online on Monday Sesame Workshop, which produces the show, decided not to air it.
"In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on YouTube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers," the show said in a statement, adding it valued the opinions of viewers, particularly parents.
The segment features Perry singing a rendition of her 2008 single "Hot N Cold" to the Muppet Elmo. The song, originally about an elusive lover, was rewritten for the clip.
The producers said the show, which has a long history of working with actors, athletes, musicians and artists, has always been written on two levels -- for the child and adult.
"We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver," the producers said.
Perry is not the first celebrity to be pulled from the show. A music video featuring singer Chris Brown was canceled in February when Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting his former girlfriend Rihanna.
Perry's hit song "California Gurls," the lead single from her current album, Teenage Dream, was named Billboard's song of the U.S. summer season.

I grew up watching the Betty Boop cartoons on TV my Dad and Grand-dad watched at the theaters.
Granted it was a cartoon, but she was all about cleavage, short skirts and a well placed garter. I don’t feel it had an adverse effect on my growing up. I think it’s much ado...
That joke is so over.
Look at the world today - it did have a bad effect.
This is a problem? The controversy is one step above forcing burqas. If you take your kid to the mall, beach, swimming pool or most public events, you’ve seen a lot worse.
Most, if not all, country stations still do not play music from The Dixie Chicks. Here in Dallas, the program director of one of the country stations was the first to pull their music after Natalie Maines opened her mouth. Ms. Maines opened her mouth and torpedoed what WAS an awesome career for that trio.
I liked their music, but I steadfastly REFUSE to buy or listen to their music now. I would rather listen to the dulcet tones of Mark Levin, The Great One.
The Eagles are more dope smoking idiots. Frey and Henley are big libs. Their music su*ks big time. Earwash.
I have a farm/country station on all the time and I have not heard the Dixie Chicks since they put so much poo on the floor and rolled around in it. In fact I have never even heard of them since then.
It is amusing what people get their knickers in a twist about.
My take: Katy Perry is cute in a girl next door kind of way, even though she’s anything but. There’s a place for toss away pop music, and she provides just that. And she’s handsomely rewarded for her efforts. The outfit? Just doesn’t seem too far out of bounds to me. Kids won’t notice, and their dads will like it.
Yup. I mean they took a match and immolated their career. They were huge in the C&W charts.
I do not listen to Country but I found the number for the local station. This was just after the little fat one open her big mouth. I called up and in a good ole boy voice said “I don’t want to hear them damn Dixie Chicks ever again.” They said thanks.
I think Natalie shortly after that rubbed salt into the wound and said “we do not need country fans.” She is a real brainiac. They had some libs show up for their shows for a short time.
Thank you, sir! May I have another!
Katy’s appearance may help reduce the future gay population if those little boys are allowed to watch.
Great, now I’ve got “’Cause I’m a Blonde” running through my head.
I think I’ve figured out all but the last c.
I would, who wouldn’t?
Well, that was kind of fun. She’s pretty easy on the eyes. I didn’t know that was her song - obviously a heavily produced and processed voice, so probably no real singing ability. What’s the big deal?
LOL! Yeah I think the little one just vaporized their careers. I don’t think anyone misses them.
