Quit reading at point 2.

Only about 2% of a retail sale is profit. The rest has to cover costs, such as the facilities, employees, utilities, merchandise, insurance, maintenance, security, advertising, and (a huge part of the cost) shoplifting.

I swear these people have to have somebody walk them through the process of velcro tying their shoes every morning.

I minimized my shopping trips to Walmart, especially after they came out in favor of obamacare.

I didn't know that. Dang. I've heard over the years that Costco Central leans far, far left.

For a while, Wal-Mart kept a big display up front where people could sign notes of support to our Troops and, I think, contribute to a fund. Lots of (gasp) red, white and blue! I liked that.

I love Wal-Mart. I once had a BJ’s membership, actually I signed up for a 60 day TRIAL membership, and never went beyond that. When the trial expired, I was happy to go back to Wally World! One thing that torques me about the price club stores is that you can’t shop for two people there. They only offer humongous quantities or sizes of grocery and other items, enough to feed Coxie’s Army!

The World’s largest Public/Government employer you may ask?

Why, it’s the United Kingdom’s Health Services Branch.

Soon to be overtaken by the U.S.’s...

Of course we all know that 'capitalism' doesn't work. LOL!

I shop at Wal-Mart. Might as well, since our taxpayer dollars are subsidizing their employees' health care, food stamps, EITC, low-income rents, etc., etc.

Capitalism did work, but you haven't seen much of it around the USA lately.

You are right. After Katrina Wal-Mart used their vast distribution net work to get needed supplies from food to ice to generators to the Mississippi coast. And not only the coast, Mississippi was hit hard even 200 miles inland.

Employees who were displaced and found themselves as refugees in distant towns and cities and were welcomed to work in the local stores. They brought in huge generators to power their stores that did not have electricity. They were some of the only places to go for food and other supplies.

Walmart began from a Mom & Pop store on the square in Bentonville, Arkansas. The first Walmart store opened in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas.

My only problem with Walmart is that when they move in all the little mom and pop stores close up.

Ironically, an opposite scenario happened in my town of 12,000.

Walmart was sort of centralized. The new superstore opened on the edge of town about 5 miles from the old location.

Before the new superstore, Walmart's competition was one small General Dollar store.

After the superstore opened, there was a large void in the area they moved away from. Since then, a second Dollar General, a Family Dollar, a Dollar Tree, an Atwoods farm supply, a Walgreens, and an expanded USA Drug opened. All of them seem to be making enough to keep the doors open.

So let me get this straight; only employees who work at Walmart get government benefits or all employees who work at Walmart get government benefits? I’m confused. Does Walmart force the government to provide benefits or does Walmart force the employee to work at their stores? I’ve got it; Walmart forces them to not live within their means and therefore they must get government benefits! I guess it’s impossible that Walmart employs people who otherwise might not even have a job and actually decreases the amount paid in government benefits. The statement you made is right out of the democrat handbook, and it’s illogical.

[The Country of] Wal-Mart - the largest corporation and riches in the world.

The heirs to Wal-Mart's Walton family fortune and investment banking giant Goldman Sachs have together invested $1 billion in Global Hyatt Hotels.

The Waltons — the USA's richest family — have quietly become top philanthropists in education reform, including controversial charter-school and school-voucher causes.

Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Walmart donated $20 million in cash, 1,500 truckloads of free merchandise, food for 100,000 meals, as well as the promise of a job for every one of its displaced workers.

They were praised for expanding their antidiscrimination policy protecting gay and lesbian employees, as well as for a new definition of "family" that included same-sex partners.

Walmart created its own electric company in Texas, Texas Retail Energy, and plans to supply its stores with cheap power purchased at wholesale prices.

March 20, 2009, Wal-Mart announced that it is paying a combined $933.6 million in bonuses to every full and part time hourly worker of the company. An additional $788.8 million in profit sharing, 401(k) contributions, and hundreds of millions of dollars in merchandise discounts and contributions to the employees' stock purchase plan is also included in this plan.

February 22, 2010, the company confirming it was acquiring video streaming company Vudu, Inc. for an estimated $100 million. Vudu is Silicon Valley start-up whose three-year-old online movie service is being built into an increasing number of televisions and Blu-ray players.

Neighborhood Markets by Walmart are grocery stores that average about 42,000 square feet (3,901.9 m2). They are used to fill the gap between Discount Store and Supercenters.

Wal-Mart opened "Supermercado de Wal-Mart" locations to appeal to Hispanic communities in the United States. The first one, a 39,000 square feet (3,600 m2) store in the Spring Branch area of Houston, opened on Wednesday April 29, 2009. The store was a conversion of an existing Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart also planned to open "Mas Club," a warehouse retail operation patterned after Sam's Club.

40% of products sold in Wal-Mart are private label store brands, or products offered by Wal-Mart and produced through contracts with manufacturers. Wal-Mart began offering private label brands in 1991 with the launch of Sam's Choice, a brand of drinks produced by Cott Beverages exclusively for Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart's international operations currently comprise 4,081 stores and 664,000 workers in 14 countries outside the United States. There are wholly owned operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and the UK. With 2.1 million employees worldwide, the company is the largest private employer in the US and Mexico, and one of the largest in Canada.

January 2009, the company acquired a controlling interest in the largest grocer in Chile, Distribucion y Servicio D&S SA

In 2010, Wal-Mart teamed with Procter & Gamble to produce Secrets of the Mountain and The Jensen Project, 2 hour family movies which featured the characters using Wal-Mart and Procter & Gamble branded products. The Jensen Project also featured a preview of a product to be released in several months in Wal-Mart stores. A third movie, A Walk in My Shoes, will air later in 2010 and a fourth is in production. Wal-Mart's director of brand marketing also serves as co-chair of the Association of National Advertisers's Alliance for Family Entertainment.

The average US Wal-Mart customer's income is below the national average, and analysts recently estimated that more than one-fifth of them lack a bank account, twice the national rate.

A poll indicated that after 2004 US Presidential Election 76% of voters who shopped at Wal-Mart once a week voted for George W. Bush, 23% supported senator John Kerry.

Walmart Moms chose Barack Obama in 2008,today they offer the President poor marks. By a margin of 48% to 43% Walmart Moms say they voted for Barack Obama in 2008, but almost two years later a majority of these women (52%) say they disapprove of the job the president is doing, while 40% approve. This is a much harsher assessment of the President than that among all registered voters (47% approve, 49% disapprove).

Walmart Moms hold net negative views of the Democratic Party and its leaders, and net positive views of the Republican Party. Fewer than three-in-ten (27%) of Walmart Moms have a positive view of the Democratic Party, while 46% have a negative view. They also have a net negative view of the President (39% positive, 48% negative) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (21% positive, 37% negative). However, when it comes to the Republican Party, Walmart Moms have a more favorable view (37% positive, 30% negative). Minority Leader John Boehner is largely unknown to these women – just 29% have heard of him. Source polls

U.S. companies would be much more competitive if all of them quit providing health insurance to employees. Governments and employers should get out of the business of providing health insurance or health care.

If we can get rid of health insurance (except for HSA's) and phase out (over three to five years) Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP programs, consumers will become more cost-conscious and efficient in their demand for health services.

Walmart has been a leader in holding the line against employee demands for health insurance.
