America is known as the Great Melting Pot.
But a closer look at census data shows we're a lot closer to a dinner plate with the peas here, carrots here, potatoes here, and steak over there. In other words, a very high level of racial segregation.
This cool series of maps was produced by Eric Fischer, based on a map of Chicago from Bill Rankin's Radical Cartography.
Red represents white people, blue is black, green is Asian, and orange is Hispanic, and each dot is 25 people.

The title “extreme segregation” smacks of someone evil doing gerrymandering to ensure this happens.
Nothing is further from the truth, since many, many years ago.
People have free will for a long time now and they all have preferences to be around people like themselves.
The term “segregation” is used to ominously denote racial preferences, and it smacks of the author wishing to show this which it does not.

It would be interesting to see these maps laid over with mass transit lines too. We used to say back in the 60s in Atlanta where we had a white doughnut surrounding a black center that the whites commuted downtown in the morning and the blacks went to the suburbs to work and then everyone switched back in the evening. MARTA was said to be Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta.

Atlanta seems to have a clear North-South divide.

Note: Red is White, Blue is Black, Green is Asian, and Orange is Hispanic, and each dot is 25 people. Boy, ain't that the truth. Look how electing Obama has thrown the visible light spectrum out of whack!

As an ametuer geographer, this is really cool.
Thanks for posting this.
It would have been nice to overlay subdivision labels and major highways, to give it a little more definition.
But pretty cool.

Just need to go south a little more to hit Peachtree City. Depends on where the city limit line is drawn. When I was kid Atlanta was entirely in Fulton and Dekalb counties, then we went to the 5 county greater Atlanta are and last I heard it was 11 counties and metastasizing rapidly. Eventually there will be a city called I-85 from Atlanta all the way to NY.

My neighborhood in Flower Mound, which is considered an upper-middle class area of the Metroplex, has a lot of diversity in terms of race, there are at least three black families up the street and on the street right next to me, there are also Hispanic families, and also families of professionals who came here from India. It’s not about race, it’s about the values, and we all share the same values, and that’s what matters.

I live in one of the most conservative cities in Colorado (Colorado Springs at 2:1 ratio of R:D registered voters.)
Such a conservative stronghold must be a picture of racial segregation, right?!?

On the other hand, here we have extremely left-leaning (and socialist utopia) Denver.
And somehow Hickenstupid is winning the race for Governor.

Would be interesting to see this chart for Detroit. The City of Detroit (everything south of 8-mile) is around 90% black. One of the newspapers there analyzed census data for the 5 largest suburbs, and out of a total population of 500,000 they could only identify about 5000 black families. Those are Apartheid South Africa type numbers.

Here's Detroit for you...
Detroit: Everyone is black in the city, and everyone is white in the suburbs

I think the only time a lot of whites are in downtown Detroit is for Red Wings games.

Id like to see how they match up with maps of high crime areas.
About how you'd expect.

btw, last night we tried to watch ABC's “Detroit 1-8-7” It has to be the most boring show I have seen, as if done by amateurs for a college class project. None of us watched it to the end.
