Sales of Comic Books Plunge. Is Liberal Bias to Blame?
Federal Review ^ | 09/21/10

Posted on 09/21/2010 5:56:35 PM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

[T]he Aug. 2010 comic sales were down 17 percent from one year earlier, the steepest year-over-year sales slide since the 19 percent drop in May 2009...Only time will tell if this is an aberration or the sign of a steepening slide for the sequential art industry....the most popular comic book in the country sold a little over 90,000 copies nationwide. That's a smaller circulation than many regional newspapers.

As many people know, comic books used to have sales figures in the millions. Even as late as 1996, an issue of X-men had a circulation more twice what it is now.

I'm sure there are many reason for the decline. Still, I have to wonder if the mainstream companies' strong pro-Obama, pro-liberal, bias isn't a contributing factor.

Since 2009, mainstream comic books, especially from industry leader Marvel, have gone out of their way to laud the president and attack his detractors. The company even went so far as to publish a story where Captain America all but declared the Tea Party to be a group of racists.

At any given time, approximately one-third to one-half of the country supports conservatives and/or republican policies. With this in mind, any sane business would have to stop and consideration whether alienating half their potential customer base is a good thing.

It's entirely possible that, as the bloom comes off the Obama rose, entertainment companies that continue to try and shove the president's policies down the throats of their audiences may see their fortunes fade just as quickly as those of the Democrat party.

See my reply 34. I wish I had time to track down some jpegs of the BHO crapfests cranked out between 10/2008-03/2010-the "art" in the Previews catalogs has to be seen to be believed.( And the anti Sarah Palin comics were as insulting as the BHO comics were laudatory.)I agree with the premise of your OP : The liberal bias HAS to be at least a small part of the comic industry's financial troubles. You cannot insult the views of so many readers before they decide to stop being readers and stop paying money to be insulted. In all the years I've bought comics, I have NEVER seen anything like the 'celebritization" of BHO as a comic book character, never mind the multiple autobiographical comics (which were to be expected).

I do think the industry's main trouble is, it's hard to find comic book stores within easy distance of prospective readers. So many have shut down, Previews will only sell to dealers not readers, and subscription services are a PITA (and not all readers even know about Westfield or similar services.)

I think the real reason behind the Bamy love-fest is that so many of the comic artists are gay.

Could be any number of things. Could be the economy. You can’t eat comics or trade them for rent payments.

Maybe it is just that there are so many movies that have adapted comic books that people simply prefer to wait for the movie?

And then, having Captain America trash Americans doesn’t help much either.

LOL!

Well, if I knew that in that distant past of seeing this cover, I had forgotten it!

You are right. There is IS something there that doesn't belong - ha-ha - an extra finger...or the artist was not good at drawing hands! :)

Just the ‘Mad’(madcap) brand of humor, I think!

Ye Gods! In that second pick Spidey looks more like the Red Skull than "your friendly neighborhood Spiderman".

Yes, today's comics have gone completely bonkers in favor of radical left, pro-gay, pro-lesbian, pro-Obama propaganda. Hope the artists enjoy their stay in the unemployment line.

I’ll never buy another Marvel comic again but I will be waiting in line for Xerxes by Frank Miller (Dark Horse Comics).

Yeah I think Marvel shot themselves in the foot , I can’t be the only one who will no longer buy their stuff.

Cheap entertainment usually does good in a bad economy.

Its the PC nonsense and crappy writing thats killing DC and Marvel

this site is several years old but its indicative of the crap fest that DC has become

http://www.unheardtaunts.com/wir/

meanwhile fun and some times serious comics like the Batman Adventures or JUL were canceled after just a short run

The Hipsters are un-employed and cannot afford to buy comics.

My opinion of the best Presidential appearance in comics:

Back in the mid-1980's there was an issue of Uncanny X-Men (I think it was back before the Mutant Massacre) where they are playing a game of baseball. Colossus hits a fly ball into the upper atmosphere and Rogue goes zipping up to get it.

She manages to catch it up around 30,000 feet and looks over to see Ronald Reagan staring at her through one of the windows on Air Force One. She flies over, kisses the outside of the window, waves, and disappears. Reagan looks over at his aide, tells him that they'd best keep this to themselves, and then continues their previous conversation.

Looks like the gay guy added to the Archie series didn’t help, after all...?"

I thought that was a stupid idea too..

..."The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books," stated Archie Comics Co- CEO, Jon Goldwater....
