Sales of Comic Books Plunge. Is Liberal Bias to Blame?
Federal Review ^ | 09/21/10

Posted on 09/21/2010 5:56:35 PM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

[T]he Aug. 2010 comic sales were down 17 percent from one year earlier, the steepest year-over-year sales slide since the 19 percent drop in May 2009...Only time will tell if this is an aberration or the sign of a steepening slide for the sequential art industry....the most popular comic book in the country sold a little over 90,000 copies nationwide. That's a smaller circulation than many regional newspapers.

As many people know, comic books used to have sales figures in the millions. Even as late as 1996, an issue of X-men had a circulation more twice what it is now.

I'm sure there are many reason for the decline. Still, I have to wonder if the mainstream companies' strong pro-Obama, pro-liberal, bias isn't a contributing factor.

Since 2009, mainstream comic books, especially from industry leader Marvel, have gone out of their way to laud the president and attack his detractors. The company even went so far as to publish a story where Captain America all but declared the Tea Party to be a group of racists.

At any given time, approximately one-third to one-half of the country supports conservatives and/or republican policies. With this in mind, any sane business would have to stop and consideration whether alienating half their potential customer base is a good thing.

It's entirely possible that, as the bloom comes off the Obama rose, entertainment companies that continue to try and shove the president's policies down the throats of their audiences may see their fortunes fade just as quickly as those of the Democrat party.

Interesting. Not into comics myself, but an acquaintance who is, and who attended the recent big Chicago show was disappointed in the turnout. I suspect the producers of this material underestimate their audience. If so it only illustrates once more how leftwing ideologues can kill off popular culture.

Sales went down because the reading ability of liberals dropped from comic books down to watching The View and Jon Stewart.

Liberal bias in comics? Now that's just nuts.

In an age when kids with an internet connection can play games with anyone in the world, comic books are doomed.

It's 3D software for artists that's doing in the comic books.

This software has two effects. The first is that the artist can POSE the characters without redrawing the scene. That right there really cuts down the time to produce a comic.

The second is that the artist can probably put out a video with 100 times the scene/character changes in less time than needed to produce a comic.

The cost, to the artist, is dramatically reduced by simply producing a video.

There's not much money in it yet, so the artists have to keep their day jobs for a while longer, but the advertising bucks should eventually flow and a good 3D artist will make many times what the richest cartoonist ever made.

Take a look at TV advertising ~ that's 3D software at work. They are getting rid of the actors!

nah, its just that nobody has a sense of humor anymore.

Liberal 'political correctness' has killed off sense of humor ... nobody dares say anything even seemingly humorous anymore, lest the 'offended police' beat them down.

Looks like the gay guy added to the Archie series didn’t help, after all...?

Since I bothered to read your thesis, I have to agree the odds for it are good.

Everything he's associated with is about as appealing as a pile dog crap on the sidewalk.

When they start having women on the radio say things like, "I still believe!" you know they're scraping the bottom of thier barrels.

I think both Marvel and DC—now increasingly wary of their bottom lines in terms of profit—may have to seriously look at no longer supporting an unpopular President, because that attitude is seriously hurting comic book sales. They don’t want a repeat of the 1990’s when comic book sales plunged and caused serious losses at both DC and Marvel.

Not surprised. Liberals ruined The Reader’s Digest and National Geographic. Why not ruin comics as well?

Circa 1974 .. this MAD cover was an outrage in the marketplace! Store owners tore off its front cover on display for sale ... but I was a MAD subscriber at the time and got mine in the mail directly from 485 MADison Ave NY NY ...intact. Heeheheheee

Still have it to this day :)

I gave up on comics books many years ago, after the price went over a buck a book. Comics were disposable entertainment, nothing more.

Technology and the internet. Why should a kid go to the store and buy tame comic books when he can go online and get explicit hentai comics in the privacy of his own room?
