DeMint Promotes Redistributing Power to States (DeMint would dismantle many federal departments)
Roll Call ^ | 2010-09-19 | Melanie Starkey

Posted on 09/19/2010 4:41:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Sen. Jim DeMint argued for a “devolution of power out of Washington,” saying Sunday that “the fact is, education probably would work a lot better without the Department of Education.”

The South Carolina Republican had been asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether candidates whom he and the tea party movement have endorsed are too far out of the political mainstream. When host Candy Crowley gave Sharron Angle’s call to abolish the Education Department as an example, DeMint said, “She’s very bold to say it.” Angle is the GOP candidate challenging Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) for his Senate seat in Nevada.

I would support a devolution of power out of Washington for education, health care, transportation, and I’ve introduced a lot of legislation for that, too,” DeMint added, saying the power should go to the states. “And you can do it in a common-sense, reasonable way that doesn’t disrupt any of the activities that we support.”

Finally, a Republican on the attack, actually willing to call for the reversal of the welfare state, rather than simply manage it growth, trying to slow it down, etc.

All that is playing defense, you can’t win if you don’t ever go on the offense.

Wish you were right...but that is just not true. The majority of the GOP are squishy middle of the road, put their finger into the air types. If I had to put a percentage of actual conservatives (not just during election time) in the GOP, it would be less than 20%. That may seem low to you but I really think that you are going by what they say instead of what they do and how they vote when it counts.

Now when that percentage get to say 40% or more, things will start to change but not before. When that magic number is reached (and it may require a larger percentage), the change will be dramatic!

PBS and NPR are more like elitist re-education organizations.

During Reagan's second term in 1986, states were given the right to set the 55 limit to 65 on interstate highways in areas defined as rural by federal regulation.

Your memory is better than mine, I remember Jimmy Carter wondered how he could have gotten beaten by a man who ran against the speed limit.

I know, I remember how big an issue it was, especially for truckers whose machines were optimized for the higher speed. I say that because this late in life some things I know to be true, are not true, except in my own memory, so I should do a little more research before I jump.

Getting old is mostly a little better than the other option.

Not bad - and he’s being coy about 2012, VERY SMART. You want people to want you to run...then you run (not the other way around). If he keeps this up, he’s a look for 2012 - if he really does want the top job.

Oh, and just listen to the reaction from the GOP when DeMint gives them hell. Just shows that the majority are not behind him...

That’s exactly where this debate needs to move - which agencies and departments to shut down within the first 90, 120, 180, 365 days. We simply can’t afford it all, nothing to debate on that aspect of it anymore.

If Palin and Demint both decide to run in the primaries, they are both equally qualified in my book. I will support either one 200% if either one comes out on top at the end. My vote though will be for Palin at this point. There is no one out there who has taken so much from the Left and demonstrated the tenacity to fight back. She will do the same as President, with enemies of American inside and outside this country.

Tea Party should become a third party and rename itself “Constitution Party.” As has been said elsewhere, all the experts said it’d be suicide to form a separate party, and that we had to work with the GOP. Given what we’ve seen from Murkowski, Crist, and the rest (not to mention much of the mainstream GOP), it might be time to form the Constitution Party. Though Lincoln didn’t necessarily want to destroy the Whigs, his Republican Party led to the Whigs’ demise. Similarly, perhaps the Constitution Party (limited gonvernment, Constitutional strict constructionalism) would lead to the demise of another party... At least, then we’d know what our party REALLY stands for!

The Rinos have offered no restructing of government to get out from under the debt and oppression. They offer only tweaking which keeps the monster limping along until the next economic boom or socialist majority where they can feed revive it full force.

I wanted cuts to whole departments when Reagan took power and I still do.

I remember when I was in as late as 3rd grade, we started school after Labor day and then 4th grade, we started at the end of August and then four years later, we started Aug 20 !

Started Aug 4 here in upper East Tennessee. There is a list as long as my arm of what the feds are into that they have no business in.

It's way past time to have this debate - but better late than never and if DeMint can get some traction - Go Man Go!!!

Absolutely...just along for the ride and power. Rino’s have to center and has been show so many time, will simply switch parties to stay in power.

Not only have they offered no options, they are really only there to share in the proceeds. That is what makes them who they are. They should absolutely NEVER be elected again! I don’t give a damn whether ROVE or KRAUTHAMMER agrees or not!

Dear Senator DeMint:

Here’s my suggestion for the first law to be passed by the 2011 Republican Congress:

“Congress shall not impose or enforce any individual mandate.”

Thank you.

I’m with you. One of the reasons I don’t post as much, is because I got flamed when I spoke of a 3rd party. But, I think people are starting to realize the “3rd party” is in fact the majority party.

If Demint, Ryan, Palin- Limbaugh etc. would create it— the people would join it.
